BF Moms - HELP...Supply plummeting

I've been EBF for 7 1/2 months, and my goal is one year.  I've always had a pretty abundent supply, but this weekend I noticed I wasn't filling up as much as usual.  Sure enough DS was unhappy after every feeding yesterday, and today I'm pumping since I'm at work and I'm only getting 4 or 5 ounces per session - he's used to eating 8 ounces at a time!

I am just getting over a cold, and we took the baby on his first flight/weekend away this weekend - not sure if either of those things would affect my supply??

Anyway, anyone have any advice for increasing my supply back up??  I will be so bummed if I have to stop now :(

Re: BF Moms - HELP...Supply plummeting

  • Kellymom.com has some great suggestions.

    Keep feeding and pumping and your supply should pick back up.  Change of routine can mess with supply.

  • mine has been plummetting since i got my first pp period, a couple weeks ago. i am pumping and getting maybe an ounce or two. we had to start supplementing yesterday. i drink the tea 3x a day, i drink a ton of water, i eat a lot. i'm getting more rest. i don't know what's going on.

    but my little sister told me her supply always disappeared around 6 mos, so i am worried that it's just my body.

  • My supply took a dip two weeks ago.  I think it was directly related to the fact that I had an unpleasant stomach bug and a cold.  I wasn't eating or drinking as much as usual.  It took about a week to get back to where I was before getting sick.  I upped by calories and pumped like crazy when I was at work - and cut out solids for DD over the weekend.  Kellymom.com is a great resource.  Good Luck!
  • Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle (3caps, 3x/day) and increasing my water intake really helped me.

    I'll also post the lactation cookie recipe in a few seconds when I find it.  (The code always gets messed up at the top, but I can't figure out how to fix it.)  They're great, work well, and will increase the size of your arse too!  LOL!

    * 1 cup butter or marg
    * 1 cup sugar
    * 1 cup brown sugar
    * 4 tablespoons water
    * 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
    * 2 large eggs
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla
    * 2 cups flour
    * 1 teaspoon baking soda
    * 1 teaspoon salt
    * 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
    * 1 cup or more chocolate chips
    * 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)

    Directions:

    Preheat oven at 375 degrees F. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.

    Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

    Serves: 6 dozen cookies

    Preparation time: 15 minutes

    *can be found at any local health food store.
    *NOTE* IT MUST BE BREWERS YEAST, NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

    I always use 2c of chocolate chips b/c that's what comes in a pkg...Why have 1/2 a bag sitting in the cabinet when you can never really have enough chocolate in cookies?  I also use extra (~3T) of brewer's yeast b/c it doesn't change the flavor of the cookie, and it's good for your supply.

  • Definitely eat more, sleep more, and drink more water. I have been drinking mother's milk tea every morning and will probably make those cookies this weekend. Just don't fret and keep nursing. It's a hump, you'll get over it. No formula supplements!

  • my supply tanked at 7 - 7.5 months too.  Actually it has been steadily decreasing since I returned to work at 5 months, but it got bad enough at 7.5 months that I have been supplementing with formula during the day.  I am taking fenugreek, drinking lots of water, the tea - I've seen minimal improvement, but enough that I may be able to stop supplementing soon (I was only having to add 1oz of formula to each of DD bottles for daycare).  Good luck - and remember that you don't have to give it up if you're not ready.  Even if you have to supplement, getting some BM mixed with formula is still better than no BM (IMO).
