Because DD falls asleep in her seat ALL the time (pretty much every time we're in the car!) it's so nice that we can just pop out the infant seat and take it in the house, so she can keep sleeping, or we can just pop it into the stroller so we can go into a store, etc... I think it would be quite a pain to have to take her out every time! Plus when we go out to eat, it's great that she can either sleep or hang out in the seat too, since she can't sit up in a high chair just yet!
The good thing about an infant car seat is most of them are a carrier, which is very nice to have when your baby is little. The good thing about a convertible is you don't have to buy more than one carseat (until they get to a booster, of course). Personally, I wouldn't give up the carrier aspect of the infant car seat. HTH.
it works for a lot of people. The infant seats are safer than convertibles when they're really little, but the convertible seats are safe as well. I really valued not needing to wake her up to take her out of the car though.

It's fine. You just have to make sure you get one suitable for a newborn. Although they all say 5+ lbs, they're not all made for a newborn, and the bottom harness slot may be well above their shoulders. I know britax seats are way too high for an average newborn. Sunshine kids radian, cosco scenera, evenflo triumph advance and the first years trufit are all seats good for newborns.
