Dairy allergy ?

Can it just suddenly appear?? DS has had diarrhea & green mucousy stools and when we went to the pedi, she thought he may have a stomach bug b/c 10 people in my family had stomach bugs recently.  She had him on soy formula with some rice cereal to thicken his stools. That helped and after 3 days we went back to BFing. Everything was fine for the first few days or so, but now he's starting it back again.  I'm wondering could he just randomly develop a dairy allergy this late? TIA!

Re: Dairy allergy ?

  • I don't know but the part about it getting better but coming back sounds suspect to me.

I think it might be possible because I read somewhere that the more they are exposed to something, their allergies get stronger. Don't quote me on that one...

I would do some trial and error. If it gets better and then worse again, that was a huge sign for us.

  • My older DD started having green mucousy stools with streaks of blood in them around 3 months.  The pedi "poo-pooed" the idea of it being an allergy (no pun intended) but guess what- it went away when I cut out dairy.  Now at 18 months we are switching her from soy milk to cow's milk, and she seems to be fine with all dairy.  So maybe it was a sensitivity but I definitely feel it was dairy-related.  I found a lot of helpful information on kellymom.com and the LLL forums- there is one specifically for allergies.

  • DS was diagnosed with his dairy (& soy) allergy at 2.5 months (bloody, mucousy diarrhea).  FYI- Most rice cereal has dairy in it- trust me- I've looked!
