Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your DC start cereal?

And did you start it on your own or did you wait for the dr? Just curious! TIA!

Re: When did your DC start cereal?

  • It's best to wait until 6 months. Most babies aren't really ready at 4 months, and rarely are their digestive systems ready to handle it. I never did cereal, though. It is honestly a waste--it provides no nutritional value at all. If what they're eating will be taking away from formula or breastmilk, it's best to give something that has nutrients. Avocado is the best to start with, IMO.

  • We haven't yet.  We're waiting at least another few weeks to start solids, and we won't start with cereal.  Probably bananas and avocado.

  • we won't be starting until at least 6 months, and we'll most likely start with avocado as well.

  • We got the ok from dr at 4 months but DD wasn't ready.  I tried cereal twice and she gagged and I couldn't make her eat if she was gagging.  I tried again at 5 months and put some fresh banana in it and a little apple juice and she likes it!
  • We started putting it in his bottle to help with reflux & spitting up around 4 months. I also tried with a spoon then, and it was a big failure. I tried oatmeal cereal yesterday, and it went better. We tried again today, and it was a little better. He gets it in his mouth, and then it's like he doesn't know what to do with it- it sits in there, or he spits it back out. A work in progress! We will start other solids when he is just about 6 months.

  • Hey there! ?I know it seems like most on this board say to start at 6 months, but I started at 4months 1week after our pedi visit. ?He's doing great! ?

I buy the Gerber Organic cereal - it fortified with vitamins and iron, so its not empty calories and he's still getting PLENTY of formula.?

We did cereal alone for just a week, then started with veggies and fruit mixed in. ?He was eating 38 oz a day in formula and had more than doubled his birth weight. ?We've had a day or two where he didn't want solids and I didn't force it, just up'd the formula that day. ?

    He now does:

    7 - 8am - 6oz-7oz formula 2 tbsp cereal and 1/2 jar fruit mixed in

    12-1pm - 6oz-7oz formula 2 tbsp cereal?

    5-6pm - 6oz-7oz formula 1 jar of veggies

    10-11pm - 8oz bottle?

Sometimes we have an afternoon "snack" - 4oz bottle?

24-32oz of formula a day of formula a day plus 1 1/2 jars of babyfood and 4 tbsp cereal and he seems very satisfied :-)

Everyone has an opinion...he's still getting plenty of formula and he's enjoying his solids too - he ALWAYS takes the whole bottle first then we do food, if he doesn't finish we know he still got all his nutrients.

  • at 4.5 months. recommended by the doctor.
  • I agree with pp. Cereals have vitamins and iron with are good for DC (they are not empty calories). My pedi gave DD the ok at her 4 month appt, but we are going to wait a few more weeks because it's a personal choice. It is not a replacement, just an addition. But make your own decisions. GL.
