So many 4 month appt posts today...our experience was...
On Thursday DS had a regular 4 month check up with shots. When we went to his appointment and they listened to his heart, the Dr. said his heart "was going a little faster than they like" (They didn't want to alarm us) They had an EKG done and when we went back up the Dr. said the EMT was going to be coming in just because they needed back up services just in case. EMT came and hooked him up to their monitors and once they saw how fast his heart was going - which happened to be close to 300 (over twice as fast as what it should have been) they wanted to be down in the ER where they could control things a little better. Once down in the ER they got an IV in him and gave him medication to slow his heart which worked instantly. Once he was stabilized he and I went by ambulance to Rochester and DH followed in the car.
Once we got to Rochester and checked in everything was going a little better. They did an ultrasound of his heart and started him on regular medication. They said it must not have been going on too long because the ultrasound showed to be normal. We were in the PICU for monitoring overnight. Things during the night were fine but then the next morning it happened again. He was hooked to the monitor and they were able to actually see it happen. They tried to get his heart rate back to normal with out medication. This involved literally taking a bowl of ice and shoving his face in it. It's supposed to basically shock the heart and get it beating normal again. This didn't work though and they ended up giving him the medication again, which again slowed his heart immediately. All of this meant another night of monitoring in the PICU and they doubled his medication rate.
Friday night was uneventful and we were sent home Saturday morning. What he was diagnosed with is Supraventricular Tachycardia. He is on Propranolol until he is a year old - at which point they will reevaluate him and see if the medication needs to continue. His cardiologist said that he might grow out of it - we'll keep our fingers crossed. This never presented any symptoms so we don't know if he has had it all along or not. It was just by coincidence that they caught it at his 4 month check up. When it happened in Rochester he was just sitting on my lap and then all of a sudden his heart rate spiked to about 250. During the whole thing though, DS was his normal happy self (unless of course he was getting poked or his face shoved in ice.)
So our 4 month appt was hell. He never got his shots of course - have to set up an appt today to do that now. But as long as he's going to be OK!
Re: 4 month appt turned HELL (LONG)
Oh man how scary!! I hope everything turns out okay.
I would not have liked having to shove his face in ice! That is just mean! ?
It was Mayo. And thanks for the well wishes ladies. He's doing good now. It was super scary - esp considering we just went in for a normal 4 month check up and it turned into something else. I found out though that what he has is pretty common on my mom's side of the family. It can be controlled.
thank god they caught it! i'll pray he grows out of it!
