Mucusy stools

What can cause this?  I've cut out dairy already and the bloody stool stopped, but she still has lots of mucus in her stool and spit up.  FWIW - we go to the pedi on Wednesday so I can ask there as well, just trying to get as much info as possible.

  • Gah. We have been dealing with this same issue. Green, mucous, blood..I swear I am on poop patrol 24/7!! I've cut dairy too.

Anyway, could it be a hindmilk/foremilk issue? Don't you have a plentiful supply? Go to kellymom and read about oversupply issues.   I block nurse and they seem to go back to normal. I also wonder if it isn't some drainage. He's been stuffy lately too.

Good luck. Keep me posted on what works and what doesn't.

  • I'm interested to see what responses this gets.  We dealt with a couple of these this weekend.

My supply seems to be evening out for the most part (mornings are the big issue) but she's always been a single boob per feeding girl.  Even on days where I seem to have a lower supply than she wants I haven't seen a diaper without mucus in it.  :-(  I think we're going to have them check her for blood in it in case we can't see it - and if so, then I guess I'll have to move on to eliminating soy or something else.  FF sure seems like it would be easier at times!

Doesn't it though?? It's stressful. I agree. Keep working at it. Let me know how it goes.

  • I noticed mucus in his stool too, not blood though.  My supply FINALLY evened out after block nursing for a month.  I think it was the formula I was giving him to keep him interested in the bottle.  I stopped that on Friday...lets hope it gets better!  We go to the Dr. next week.
  • MANY babies that are sensitive to dairy are also sensitive to soy, something to do with the size of the protein particles are almost the same.

I'ts easy to go off dairy and replace things with their soy alternative and wonder why baby isn't feeling better! Try cutting out the soy and see if it helps.

Good luck, my baby is sensitive to just about everything :(
