One of my coworkers just had social services called on them because their 5 year old touched a girl's butt. The other mother didn't give them a chance to explain to him that was wrong, etc. Honestly, I remember kids that age showing each other private parts and running around kissing. Makes me scared for when DS gets older.
Re: Social Services? Seriously?
wow thats crazy!!!
Last year when I worked in a school (counselor), a kindergartener got sent home for kissing a female classmate on the cheek. The girls parents pressed charges and he was suspended!!!!
I'm a teacher. One time I took a Child Abuse training (i.e. what to look for) and the officer giving it said one warning sign of a sexually abused child is a child who calls their body parts by the real name (i.e vagina and penis). I thought to myself "SERIOUSLY!!! WTF??" Or how about that child has a parent who teaches them the proper name in things b/c they want to give their child proper vocabulary. My mother taught me to call my private part by its real name-not a silly nickname (which I have no problem w/ people doing that either, to each their own). I just think it's RIDICULOUS to wonder if a child is sexually abused all because they know the correct body part names. There are MANY other more valid warning signs.
Kind of goes along w/ what you posted.
WTF? I absolutely plan on teaching my son to call his penis a penis and not something silly. It is what it is, for chrissake!
I totally agree!!
Yikes.
If anything, that may have been a good chance at a teaching moment with the 5 year old about what is appropriate, and how we don't always touch other people's bodies without their permission. I mean, no big lecture or anything, but just a light easy start to what is a pretty important lesson, I think.
I agree, I think that they should have let the parents have a talk with the child and then if something like that happened again, to call ss. However, I can understand how it's important to watch out for child abuse. It's just crazy to me that I could have social services called on me for teaching my child the proper name for his body parts, or for something almost all children go through. Kind of scary.
