Suggestions please... humidifier.

I need to get one for DS's room. Do you have any suggestions on good ones? Should I do cool mist or warm? I have been reading reviews online and they aren't helping me so I wanted your opinions.

Is this baby crack machine you all talk about a humidifier or just a noise machine.

  • We have the one (Crane?) that looks like a frog.  It has been working well for us so far.  I have seen them at BRU and Target.

  • We just have the Vicks Pediatric Cool Mist. It works well and wasn't terribly expensive either. It's just a basic humidifier with the "pediatric" name on it.  :o)
  • Baby crack is just a noise machine.

I had the same problems when I was trying to pick a humidifier at Target, so I talked to the pharmacist.  Is it for general moisture to counteract the dry heat this winter, or is your DC sick?  Either one will counteract the dry heat, but you can only put vicks vapor in the warm ones.  However, most of the 'pediatric' ones are the cold ones, so once your DC is mobile it isn't a burn hazard or anything.  So I'd say if you plan on using it each winter for dry heat, then get the cool one.  If it's only going to be used when DC is sick, I might get the warm one so you can add vapor to it if necessary.  We have a warm one in DC's room because her room tends to be cold and it helps.  Once she's mobile we may get another one, or we may not.

  • We have the Crane Cool Mist Humidifier (blue drop shape) from BRU.  It's been working great with all of our congestion and is super quiet.
  • we bought a cool air one b/c somewhere i read that the warm air humidifiers can accumulate bacteria/mold. I just went to Target and bought one for like 25 bucks. It is a cool air and one of the cheaper ones. Holmes is the brand.  It works well for our bedroom, but it's a little bit loud. At first I was upset at how loud it was, but then I realized that it made DS sleep so much better and it was no need for me to use other white noise things while he slept. But if that kind of stuff bothers you when you sleep I would research on a quieter one.
  • We have a Graco cool mist humidifier that we use for both moisture and white noise. It works great, we use it every day since they were born. When the girls are sick (like right now) I switch to a warm vaporizer by Vicks (pretty cheap, works great). I do still put their cool mist humidifier on in the room when I use the warm vaporizer. I just move it right next to the door, farthest from their cribs and run in on the low setting pointing it towards the door, just need it for the noise. The warm vaporizer can still do its job to help to break up their chest congestion. The vaporizer does not make noise at all, just produces steam for the room.

  • Thanks so much. I need it mainly for dryness from the heat. I will remember all about the warm vaporizer if he gets sick.
