Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6 week old won't sleep!

She rarely naps during the day unless I hold her.  Right now she is napping in her swing only because I let her cry for 20 mins and she put herself to sleep.  She'll nap if she's in the car or carseat.  At night I rock her to sleep.  Sometimes she'll sleep for 3 hours and then is up every 2 hours.  I swaddle, play sleep music and use a paci if she wants it.  What time do you put your baby to sleep?  I start trying to around 8:30, but sometimes it can take hours!  Should I try putting her down earlier if she's tired around 7:00, is that too early?

Re: 6 week old won't sleep!

  • Mine won't go down for the night until almost midnight. ?Last night was a good night and he was asleep around 11. ?He wakes up from his last nap about 5pm, then we start the bedtime routine at 8 sharp - he eats, gets a bath, then it's straight back on the boob to top him off. ?Then I try to put him to bed at 9:30 and it NEVER WORKS. ?He sleeps for about 30mins and wakes up thinking it's party time!

  • Um...what you are describing is how a normal 6 week old sleeps - she's a newborn! I know it's overwhelming at first but you will get used to it and eventually your baby will learn to sleep better. Keep trying the swaddling and paci and there's nothing wrong with using the swing too. Do whatever works! GL

  • DD is the same way for napping and sleeping.  We got a miracle blanket and it seems to be helping at night.  DD will sleep a little bit in her swing so I try to get atleast one na in there for her.  I put DD down between 9:30 and 10:00pm.  Sometimes it does take a while to get her asleep.  I hope this phase ends soon.
  • Last night was the worst, she was up every hour!  She'll sleep okay for 2 or 3 nights then wants to have an all nighter every few days.
