DD went to the dr. Friday and she only weighs 18lbs. Pedi told me to give her Pedia sure and give her fatty foods. I don?t want to set her up for an obese life and give her junk, so any ideas on what to give to help increase in her weight gain?
I would do a lot of cheese, yogurt, carbs, and try and squeeze in extra calories when I can with things like eggs (add cheese), use heavy cream with oatmeal maybe???
don't worry, you won't be setting her up for an obese life... babies need good fat! some ideas... avocado is great... mash and mix with other foods. also, put unsalted butter on her toast or in her mashed potatoes etc.
Try a lot of high-protein foods, like meats and the such. I doubt you're setting her up for obesity by doing what the pediatrician's telling you to do. Babies, like people, have different metabolisms - she could need more than what you're giving her to sustain a healthy weight.
Has she always been small or has she just recently fallen off of her growth curve. 18lbs at 13mths has her in the 5th %tile so she is still on the charts, but I don't know where she was before. I ask because my DS has always been small - he's in the 2nd %tile for weight and the doctor has never been concerned. He said that as long as he is growing on his curve that he is not worried about it, some babies are just small. I only ask this because if my doctor were telling me to feed my DS fattier foods just to move him up on the growth chart when he'd been consistent before that, I would have a problem with it. All that said, if you daughter has fallen off of her curve and does in fact need to move back up the chart then I would recommend fattier, but healthy foods - avocado, full fat yogurt and cheeses, etc. Butter is not recommended for young children since it is not a healthy fat, but you can add some olive oil when cooking for DC as it adds the healthy fats that they need in their diet. Good luck.
