My mom and step-dad will be Oma and Opa (german for grandma and grandpa) My mom and step dad are both german.
However, my dad is also german but my step mom is Irish. So I have NO idea what they will call my dad and step mom. Anyone know the Irish words for grandma and grandpa?
Dh's mom and dad will be Mamah and Popah.
Dh thinks its weird that I would have our kids call their step parents by grandma or grandpa. But they'll be raised to always know them, so why not? Its not that Dh doesnt like my step parents, he loves them both just as much as I do, but he doesnt think its "proper" for kids to call them grandparents since they arnt my parents.
What about the rest of you?
Re: What do/will your kids call their grandparents?
we will have an oma and opa too! MH is dutch, so if the kids ever meet his dad and stepmom .... (may never happen)
they call my parents grandma and poppa
Grandma/Granddad for my parents
Nana/Grandpa (or pop-pop if my nephew sticks with it and it stays all around) for my ILs?
My parents: Gram & Granddaddy
MIL: no clue..she wanted "Mom-Mom" which we shot down immediatley.
FIL: Probably Grandpa.
my parents: nana and papa
DH's dad and stepmom: Grandpa and grandma J.
DH's mom; Grandma
Pretty ordinary.
We've never had fancy names for our grandparents, we just called them grandma and grandpa, and when we needed to clarify which one, it was either grandma angie or grandma mary, etc.
Our kids will probably do the same, too. Sorry, we're boring!
I call Dh's grandma MawMaw...and she isnt MY grandma. He said thats not the same because MawMaw makes EVERYONE call her that haha.
I left it to my daughter to decide what she calls her grandparents. They are all granny and pa. Her great gma on DH's side is German and more than once she has tried to get Adyson to call her great-oma..Ady wasn't having it. She is and always will be great-granny!
It can' get confusing since she uses the same name for everyone but if I'm not sure who she is talking about I'll ask her and she will tell me granny in Indiana or granny in Alaska...
The step parent thing..Our daughter calls my stepdad, Pa. She always has. my dad passed away when I was 15 so maybe it's a little different. She also knows that she has another Pa and that he is my daddy.
My mom is english and wants to be Nanny, my dad grandpa probably.
FIL- grandpa
MIL-grandma
step FIL- pop-pop is what the other grandkids call him, but that seems weird to me...

Grandma and grandpa for my parents
Nothing for dh parents ( dad died recently and mom well, we didnt talk to either since we got married)
My grandparents are Nana and papa D (his name is L.D.)
Thats how I was growing up. But I was always jealous of my friends who had "special" names for their grandparents llol
The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
I have no idea what our kids will call our parents - maybe we'll let them (parents) decide? I think MIL knows already what she wants, but I don't know...
I have a Grandma/Grandpa (mom's side) and a Nana/Grandad (dad's side). My Nana is English.
My niece calls my parents funny names... She came up with them and I am sure they will stick because she is the oldest.
Dad- Papa John
Mom- Jo ( her name is JoAnn and everyone calls her Jo)
MY grandma - Memaw
MY grandpa - Papa
I'm sure my DH's mom will want to be called somethign stupid.
I had an Oma and Paka (still not sure if Paka is a real word, or why there was no Opa). I'd like my future kids to use the same but my mom doesn't want to be an Oma so we'll see.
I'm half Irish. Mamo would work for Irish Gaelic grandmother. Not sure about grandfater but Pop sounds about right.

I was the same way....DH hasn't ever had contact with his grandparents....so our kids will probably go with grandma and grandpa for both sets of grand parents.
I'm a lurker, but had to reply to this one. . .
I had 5 grandparents growing up (mom has a stepmother).
Mom's parents were grandma Shirley and granddaddy (she's southern). Mother's stepmother was grandma Sandra (like OP says, she was raised as my grandmother, so I treated her like a grandmother).
Dad's parents were grandma Joan and Norman. I have called my grandfather by his first name my entire life. When my sister and I were born, he was in his forties and considered himself too young to be a "grandpa". My younger cousins call him "pop-pop".
