Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is the only difference b/w "1st" and "2nd" foods the texture?

DD seems to like her rice cereal pretty thick.  There is a lot of sputtering/spitting with the 1st foods carrots we've been giving her the past 10 days or so, which I know is perfectly normal.  But if the only difference is texture, would it be OK to give her "2nd" foods?

If there is another reason to wait, when does it become appropriate to move to 2nd foods?

TIA!

  • the texture for me between first and second is the same . . it is the amount of food that is served it different and also the types of food offered is different.
  • Loading the player...
  • it's the same texture, it's just more of it.  1st foods is 2 ounces, 2nd foods is 4 ounces.
  • i gave #2 early. jars are bigger and texture is a tad bit thicker. DD never noticed.

    Same here...

  • Ditto pp. The only difference seems to be the volume and the variety offered. If she likes it thicker you might try making your own purees. It's very easy, cheap and ds loves it. You can control the volume and texture yourself.

  • DD seems to like some of them better, a lot of the 2nd stage foods combine veggies, fruits, and sometimes even cereal (like blueberry oat...DD's new favorite).
