Baby's first cold - any suggestions?

Lily has a low fever (101) and a stuffed nose. She's also not all that happy. Any suggestions for making her feel better? I am trying to aspirate her nose, but she's protesting like crazy and making the job pretty difficult.

  • We're just getting over this in our house (he was kind enough to share with me!).  DS HATES the aspirator!!!  We used saline drops, which he used to at least tolerate, now he's not such a fan, but it's better than the bulb syringe.  I wanted to get the battery operated nasal aspirator, but DH didn't think it would help any since you can barely get near his nose as it is.  We've used lots of Kleenex which makes for a red, raw nose.  Aquaphor helps with that.  I put the Vicks Baby Rub on at night, which seems to help.  A humidifier at night helps too.  Before we got one, we would steam up the shower and sit in there.  Tylenol for the fever.

  • A little vicks on the chest and for sleeping put a pillow under one side of her bed to prop it up a bit. ?I was skeptical of the pillow thing because DS moves a ton but it made an enormous different in his ability to sleep and he didn't move at all. ?I also didn't find the aspirator to help at all, we just follow him around with kleenex and are constantly trying to keep his face clean. ?If she's got a low fever and seems uncomfortable I'd give her a little Tylenol too.
  • Saline nose drops!!! ?Every hour! ?Those are my fav. ?and they help to make sure the cold doesn't develop into an ear infection.

  • Great suggestions. Thank you!

  • DD has had 3 colds so far. We elevated the head of her crib, sometimes she slept in the bouncer. We used the humidifier & used the bathroom as a steam room. I also used baby saline drops for her stuffy nose that worked pretty well.

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • Hmmm ... Two suggestions to elevate her crib. I actually have a crib wedge because she has reflux, but we took it out. Sounds like it's worth putting back in until she feels better. Thanks!

  • definitely elevate the crib.  if she's really protesting the aspirator, you can take her into a steamy bathroom and let it run out (this also works if she's so stuffy that nothing will come out, even with the aspirator).  we like motrin better for the fever, but we also use baby vicks at night on his feet and chest under his sleeper.

colds stink :(  hope your DD feels better soon!
