Babies on the Brain

My child will be nameless.

I just spent the last ten minutes looking at the top 100 boys names and the top 100 girls names on babynames.com, and I didn't love any of them. We haven't even begun to discuss baby names, but I was bored, so I looked. Now I'm starting to think that this is going to be a loooooooooonnnnnnggg road naming our baby when the time comes.

  • FWIW, I'm glad that you didn't like any of the top 100. Both my sister and I were named because the names were "popular" in the years surrounding when we were born and it has been the biggest PITA. Sis's name is Jessica and she went kindergarten through fifth grade in the same classes as EIGHT other Jessicas. Ugh.

  • you have a loooonnngg time to worry about it.... it will come to you
  • I have to add that I am a school teacher and work with my H's youth group, so a lot of names are ruined for me because of past kids I've known (and how terrible they were) with those names.

Good point. My name is Jennifer, and I always had four or five other Jennifers in my class.

  • Maybe start at the bottom of the popular names list and go from there? :)

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • Eh, our favorite names aren't even in the top 1000. Their heights of popularity were in the 1920s. I'd rather that than my kid know 17 other people with his/her name.

  • Our name's we have had picked for a long time. It is something we do at night when we are laying in bed. Looking at the list never helped us when we were thinking about it, we always thought back to school and different jobs and names that we liked from there.

    It'll happen!

I'm sure we will change our mind again and again before we actually need it.

  • We haven't even really talked about names yet.  My kid will definitely be nameless.

  • I really try to avoid top 100 names.

Go to social security admin. website and look at their list.  I printed off the top 1000 boys and girls names.  That is where I found some of our favorites.

Make a list of the names you like, and try to get DH to do the same.  Then compare them and discuss what you really love.  It is a tough process but it can be really fun too.
