Safe to Use Orajel?

I'm going to confirm this with my pedi. But I just heard that it's not safe to use orajel for teething bc too much orajel could move to the back of their throat, numbing it, becoming a choking hazard.

Have others' pedis warned against using orajel?

Ours did for this exact reasoning. We don't use it.

  • personally i think if you're careful enough you can avoid such a situation. i test all ds's meds first, same for the orajel. we've used it and i honestly don't think it worked terribly well anyway--it was great for about 15 mins before the numbness totally wore off.

  • Ours warned us, but we still use it occasionally.

I try not to use it too often, but when I do I just put a little dab on my finger and make sure to rub it onto DS's gum really well.

  • Our pedi told us not to use it within 30 mins of a nap or bedtime, and to avoid it right before BFing.

  • I've heard of one horror story and that was enough to convince me not to use it. Baby Motrin and a cold washcloth work just as well. Our nanny recommends Ambisol, but I haven't bothered to look into it.

  • I've used it on DD when she was unable to console and waiting for tylenol/motrin to kick in. I only use a tiny bit and when you can see the teeth under the gum. HTH!

  • We don't use it anymore, but we've noticed that just massaging her gums helps just as much as the orajel used to.
  • I will not use it for this very reason.  IMO, it's not worth the risk.

Google Gentle Naturals Homeopathic Teething Drops.  We've used them and they work great.  I got it @ Target and it's like $5.00.

  • My pedi suggested orajel, but I won't use it.  I have heard the stories of it numbing the throat.  It probably wasn't used properly in those situations - ie feeding afterwards, but that doesn't matter to me.  We just distract DD during the day and give her motrin at night if necessary.
  • Our pedi office says no.
