Babies: 9 - 12 Months

5AM Bottle question

My son sleeps from 8PM to 5AM and then wakes for a bottle.  He takes 6.5 ounces and then goes back to sleep till 8AM.

At his 8AM wake up, he refuses cereal and a bottle.  He goes back down for a nap at 9:30AM and sleeps till 11'ish, and takes a full bottle then.  So he goes from 5AM to almost noon with no milk or food.  For the rest of the day, he eats full bottles every 3.5-4 hours.

Should I try to wean him from the bottle at 5AM so he will take a bottle when he wakes up at 8AM?  I have been fine with our routine but everyone else thinks it's 'wierd' that I have a baby that won't eat when he gets up in the morning?  Does anyone else's kid do this?  I'm guessing he is starting to drop bottles and has choosen to drop his morning one.

Re: 5AM Bottle question

  • My dd wakes to eat around 5am too. If I try to feed her when she wakes up she will only eat a couple of bites. I've found that if I wait an hour after she's been awake and playing she will eat in the mornings. Maybe you could try waiting a little while after your ds wakes up to see if he will eat then.

  • From what I know, it's total OZ in a day that matter, not really when they get them. DD used to take a 5 am bottle and then wake up at 7am and only drink a few oz. She did that for about a month. Then she decided to drop the 5am and do all her drinking at 7am. So it might just be a phase. It might concern me that he's not drinking from 8-noon. But if he's getting his drinks afternoon, I'm not sure if that's a big issue.
  • Thanks for the advice.  I do keep offering the bottle for the full 1.5 hours that he is awake in the morning, but he won't have any of it.  I keep thinking this is a phase and he is going to go back to taking a bottle at that point...I guess only time will tell!
  • If he is waking up at 5 and wants a bottle then that is when I would feed him. If he wont eat agian at 8 he is not ready you could try and feed him closer to his nap he may take it then. You could try chaning him at 5 and putting him back to bed. If he is only taking the bottle because you are offering it than he will probably go back to sleep and wake up agian when he is hungry.

When DS was around that age  he was getting a bottle at 6, 9, 11. when he started eating breakfast and lunch around 7 months he only started taking two AM bottles. One when he gets up (6 or 7 am) and one at 1030. Your DS could be ready to drop a bottle. Check with you pedi on the number of oz of BM/F he should be getting per day. If he is taking that much I would not worry about how often he takes the bottle. GL
