Babies on the Brain

Newbie here-with some questions!

So dh and I recently decided that we are going to ttc beginning early next year (which actually isn't too far away!!). I do have a couple of questions (and some may be dumb!) that i was going to ask my ob/gyn at my next appt (this month)--but thought i would ask here first:

-After going off BCP, how long did it take you to conceive? (I know everyone's different, but just trying to get a general feel)

-How much did you modify your current exercise routine while TTC? I have heard some people say that certain things (e.g. situps) are a no no?

?-When TTC, do you think it is best to not eat the foods/drinks that you are not supposed to while actually PG? For e.g. No soft cheeses, deli meat, coffee, wine???

-We are going to be traveling a lot over christmas/new years with my family. (i.e. long plane rides, some overseas)-if for some far off crazy chance i got pg, do you think it is that dangerous that early on to be flying? (We are talking 10-12 hour flights)

-Okay, and here are two big shallow question! I recently starting getting a lot of greys and started to get my hair highlighted. I thought it would be best if I stopped getting it done after this month? Same with pedicures? Maybe I am being overly cautious in the TTC period!

?I really do appreciate any/all feedback. All of this is so new to me and I have only just begun to dive in deep to understand things (B/c I knew I would be even more of a worrier if I started getting books, etc!)

?

Re: Newbie here-with some questions!

  • Welcome and GL.

I was on BC for 5 years and stopped it in June.  My cycles are still trying to get regular.  Some people get pregnant the first month off of BC and others have been off for a long time and are still trying.  There really is no general amount of time.

I haven't modified my exercise routine at all.  I know when you're pregnant you should watch your heart rate, but if you are just TTC I am pretty sure you can do what you want.

I know that a lot of people eat and drink what they want until they are pregnant.  I am personally cutting back on artificial sweetners.

From what I've read I do not think flying will really hurt you or baby if you are pregnant.  If that were the case there would be a lot of sick babies because a lot of people fly when they don't know they are pregnant.

I wouldn't worry about your hair or nails.  I'd say once you get pregnant you might want to make sure the hair dye is safe, but I think most of it is now.

  • If you already have a ob/gyn appt for next month, I'd definitely let him/her know you are planning on TTC and ask her any questions you still have.

It took us over 24 cycles to get pg, but I was on depo provera, which is different then BCP's.

I didn't modify my exercise, in fact we finally concieved after I lost a lot of weight and bumped up my exercise substancially.

My doctor is very liberal about the foods/drinks I can eat now, he doesn't have a problem with most of the things you mentioned in moderation so there's no way I'd cut them out before a positive pg test.

My doctor was ok with flying anytime before 32 (or was it 34...) weeks.  In 1st tri I had a lot of m/s which would have made me even more miserable flying for 10-12 hours, but you're not going to harm the baby.

My doctor said pedicures/highlighting is ok during pregnancy.

Good luck!  It's good to do a lot of research now.  I recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility and charting as soon as you're off BCP.

  • (Again, we need a magic clicky button that will tell everyone to... )

Chart of FertilityFriend.com, & read taking charge of your fertility.

some people will get KTFU first month of BCP, other it will take much much longer...

    NO, sit-ups are not harmful...

NO, if you happen to get KTFU by Xmas flying will not harm you, well unless the plane crashes I guess?

    LOL!

Yeah, fertilityfriend.com is also a great resource.  We do need a sticky over here.

Yes you need to calm down--remember how many babies get conceived when people are drunk etc and turn out fine---obviously I am not advocating for that or anything but you do not need to stress this much while TTC.  Just go about your life normally and chart if you want to learn more about your body and cycles.  Other than that--from what I understand it is ok to just go about your normal routines!

  • It took 9 months to conceive once I went off BC.  You will be fine to fly.  Eat the same as you eat now.  Read TCOYF and chart.  GL
  • I agree with the pp.  After coming off BPC, my periods were pretty regular quickly.  It took a year to conceive and it happened to be a month when I was sick and taking cough syrup (said to help CM) whether that was a coincidence...who knows.

I didn't modify exercise...although I wish I exercised more and didn't have the extra 5-10 lbs on when I did get pg...oh well.

Eat, drink...and be merry until you get your bfp.  It could take a while, add on 9 months and that is even longer to be without coffee, wine, soft cheeses...hmmm coffee, wine...soft cheeses...oh how I miss you!

Plane rides are fine.  For future knowledge, if you take longer plane rides while pg, I would get up and move/walk a bit more because of your increased blood volume amount and the risk of clots (a risk for non-pg ppl, but with more blood volume once pg a bit more movement is a good thing).

Highlights/hair color are no problem, but ask your hair dresser about their product.  The dyes used now do not contain the harmful chemicals of years gone by.  Couldn't tell you about pedicures (I don't afford myself the luxury).

    GL!

I didn't think I was that bad, but all those nice replies made me feel guilty... give it another hour or two, it should be back to normal.  Either that or wait til this question is asked for the 3rd or 4th time before lunch...

  • I was also bracing myself, but I'm glad she didn't get smoked.  People don't know, that's why they ask.

Ditto everyone else, I've been off BCP for a year and we're on cycle 6.  I think the worst thing to do is overthink it and overanalyze- I'm guilty of that myself, but recently I've had the "whatever will be will be" attitude and I'm much more relaxed.  Not to say that this attitude will get me knocked up and not that I still don't want to say FU! to people who actually have the balls to tell me to relax...
