Babies: 9 - 12 Months

it's too early to drop to 1 nap, right?

For the last 4 days, DS has refused to take a morning nap.  It's WAY to early for him to be dropping it, isn't it?  I'm currently giving him 10 minutes to try to go to sleep, but I don't think it's going to work.

  • I know if DS doesn't get his morning nap he is a wreck the rest of the day. Sometimes it takes me a half hour or 45 minutes to get him to go to sleep. I wouldn't drop it yet. Good luck!

  • I'M not planning on dropping it, but he sure is acting like he doesn't want it anymore.  He did the same thing when he dropped to two naps a few months ago...

    GRR.  Go to sleep child!

  • I would think so.  It's probably a developmental phase he's going through and it's interrupting his napping.  My first son didn't drop to one nap until about 15 months though I've heard of it happening with some babies around 10 or 11 months old.
  • 10 minutes?  Sometimes it takes DS 30-45 minutes to settle down to sleep and that includes about 10 minutes of rocking time. I would try a little harder to get him to sleep.

  • My DS isn't ready to give up either of his 2 naps yet.  He consistently naps for 2 hours in the am.  Usually 10-12.  Sometimes he fights it, so we just read and play quietly in his room for 15-20 more minutes and then he is given 15 minutes to fuss/whine/play in his crib.  After that he is almost always asleep.  His afternoon nap is the one he fights the most.  I still put him down even if it is just quiet time in his crib for 30 minutes.  He is just so active that he needs his sleep.

Well, I let him cry for 10 minutes, then just go get him.  When he really wants to go to sleep, he just does it.  Usually, if he's crying, he won't go to sleep.

He hates to be rocked, and rubbing his back/belly just makes him more upset.  He's a weird little stinker.

  • Well, he's quiet now, so maybe he did it.  I'll go check in another 2 minutes. :)
  • yeah, but my DD is trying  the same thing.  Yesterday daycare told me she didn't nap all day long until 4:45, then when I picked her up at 5:45 she went right back to sleep in the car and didn't wake until 6:45 - it was 10:30 before I got her to sleep last night! I have got to try something different tonight!
  • At his age, it's more likely that he needs a little longer to settle into sleep than it is that he's ready to drop the AM nap! It takes adults an average of 15 minutes to fall asleep at night, so it can certainly take babies as long--or longer--to get down for their naps.
  • My DD is doing the same thing, she took a good morning nap on Monday (about 2 hrs) but didn't settle down for her AM nap Tues, Wed, or today.  I put her down like I always have, after she's had her bottle and is almost asleep in my arms, then leave the room, and then I hear her over the monitor happily talking to herself and playing.  I'm thinking that it's just a phase because she's been even more curious and playful that her usual curious and playful self this week.  I'm just hoping for a good afternoon nap!!!
  • I dont' think so. DD dropped hers at 7 mos and was fine. She just doesn't require that much sleep during the day. Gradually she started sleeping longer at night instead. I'm always a fan of taking your child's cues as opposed to watching the calendar.
