S/o Poll: Property taxes

I am curious how much others pay.  I would definitely consider escrowing (is that a verb?) if ours weren't so high[Poll]

Re: S/o Poll: Property taxes

  • It's $800-$900/yr.  One of the reasons I love living in an old house in the city...the same priced house inmost of the burbs is $2500/yr or so.  My kids go to private schools ~$5k/yr so it helps us a lot to have cheaper taxes.

  • ugh...this is one of the reasons I hate this time of year. : (
We do not have ours escrowed either and I SO wish we had done it that way.  I would rather have the money gone every month and out of sight rather than having to pull out that big chunk of cash and hand it over all at once.  It hurts more that way!

Oh, and ours is right around $4600 this year.

  • we escrow and it is great because you are not hit all at once.
  • REOM, I want to cry.

  • is it bad that I honestly do not know how much we pay?  I think it is like 1% of current value (they reassess every year here)

I love to not pay out of pocket - so much easier this way!

We also have to pay property tax on our cars every year.  That is like $300 now?  It used to be much higher, and Iwoudn't be surprised if VA decided to reinstate it to bring in more money.

We live in an older home in the city and our taxes are still almost $3K/year. It's a TINY house, too!?

  • Well, they USED to be about $8,500.  But, my Town sucks and they just went up $700. for no good reason.

It won't last though.  I filed for an abatement and, when I win in March, they'll be refunding me a nice amount.

    Jerks.

Oh my gosh--$9,200 is not much less than we pay for our mortgage, taxes & insurance in a year--LOL!  Granted our house is about 2/3rds paid for (we made $$ on our first house so we had a huge down payment) but man, I cannot imagine paying that in just taxes.  It would kill me!!

  • LOL.  I answered the poll based on ONE of our houses.  If you count the total amount we'll pay then my answer is wrong.  Stupid HCOL areas!
  • $15K/year for our house and $3K/year for our beach cottage

Seriously...my mortgage payment isn't much more than that!  It's insane.  I built my house for $260,000, including land.  It's not even that great.  No landscaping.  Vinyl floors in the kitchens and bath.  Crappy countertops.  No nice whirlpool tub - no tub at all in the master bath.  They came by to assess at the height of the market and said it was valued at $360,000.  They're STILL using that value!  Idiots.  So, I filed to for the abatement because it's valued at $300,000 now.  I'm a Realtor in the Town and all of us in the office are filing for abatements.  They gave us all a sob story, but I don't care.  Maybe if they raised it $200. people wouldn't be freaking out.  We actually made the news because everyone thinks it's insane.

We have nothing here.  Nothing here requires that amount of money.  They're just idiots.  Small town fools who think only fools live in small towns.
