4-month old DD is sick, and has been for over a month now. She is really congested with a nasty cough. It's worst at night, but still definitely a problem during the day. Some nights I have trouble sleeping because of listening to her hack and struggle for air through her clogged nose - amazingly enough, SHE is still sleeping pretty well, but it makes me worried. We use the snot sucker regularly, we have a humidifier, I'm trying to keep her warm (dressing her in layers), I use the Vicks BabyRub on her chest, back, and feet regularly, and she's been getting breathing treatments. She's not getting better though, and we're almost out of breathing treatment medicine and can't afford to refill the prescription (it was $200 and we had to scrape to afford it the first time, and now it's just an impossibility). She's going to the chiropractor in the morning to see if he can help her, and she's got a doctor's appointment on Monday, but I'm not sure what the doctor will be able to do if we can't afford more medicine for the breathing treatment. I hate that we can't get it, but we have so little money coming in, and that needs to go towards crazy things like the mortgage, electric bill, water, and food.
So, other than what we've been doing, is there anything else that can help her? The breathing treatments helped for a while, then #1 and I got sick (4 days for both of us) and the baby has been sick ever since (going on two weeks now) and the breathing treatments don't appear to be helping this time.
Poor baby. This clinches it for me - if there is a #3 in our future, we will be aiming for another spring baby. Having her so little in the winter sucks.
Re: What else can I do to help her?
The only advice I have is to maybe not use the nasal aspirator as often. If you use it too much it can irritate their little noses. My pedi recommended using saline nose drops (just a couple of dollars at the drug store) instead of the aspirator. You just put a couple of drops in her nose and squeeze it, then she can sneeze it out.
I hope she feels better soon!
Try doing a steamroom for her. Run the shower on hot for 10 min w/ the bathroom door closed. Have DD in the room untill the steam clears out. The air will be easier for her to breathe. That helps my sister out (she is asthmatic)
My DD was her age and had a bad cold. Sleeping almost sitting up in a swing or carseat works wonders!
