Daycare ??

Our dcp has been sick for two days and I anticipate her not opening for the rest of the week.

This is the first time that she has been sick since we have been with her.

We always pay her for a full week, even if we have ds out for a day or so and we pay for her three weeks of vacation a year.

I think we should pay her for the full week, dh thinks that we should pro-rate the week.

What do you do when your provider is sick?

Re: Daycare ??

  • I would think it would be up to her policy..do you have a contract or aggreement with her?  I watch kids in my home, friends kids, so no contract or anything and I would never charge if I was sick and they had to find other care.

  • my son goes to a center, but if it was an inhome provider, I think that you should pro-rate.

  • I'm surprised there's nothing about sick days in the contract.  When we had a nanny, we paid for her sick days.

However, when I looked into some home daycares (before ultimately choosing a center), their contracts said that backup care would be provided if the provider was sick and you still had to pay if you chose not to use it.

  • I would pro-rate for in home daycare.

  • anytime DD has been out sick, I obviously paid her. But this summer, her DH died and she was closed the entire week. I didn't pay her but only because I had to pay for alternate care.

  • My nanny is awesome and we don't pay for any days off - if we are on vacation or she's sick or whatever. We only pay for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years and thats our choice, she didn't expect it.

However, I would say that if DCP closes their place that you wouldn't pay for those days. I say this because you are having to pay for alternative care (even if its your own sick/vaca days thats still $$). Like pp said, if they offered alternative care and you chose not to use it then you pay, but if they leave you without care, then I don't think you should pay.

  • I take DS to an in home day care.  I have been paying her for the entire week even if we have DS out a day or something, but if she is sick for more then a day, then i dont pay her.  so with your case, no i wouldn't pay her. Not unless it's in your contract with her.
  • I haven't run into this with my daycare provider, but do you have a contract that you can refer to? I'd probably pay her. I get paid sick time at work, and I bet most daycare providers work it into their contracts.
