Is the number '108' significant?

I am going through the checks that Emi got for her Christening, and DH's friend wrote her a check for $108.  Why not just 100?  Why 108?

Is this a significant, lucky number or something?  He is is Jewish, if that matters.

yes--the 8 is a luck thing in the jewish culture. we gave an a check for a bar mitzvah with an 80 or 08. in it. one of our jewish friends told us to.
