s/o to my "Nursing Experiences" post - more questions

I had a 33 week preemie but I pumped the first 12 weeks of his life and then at that point, he latched on and breastfed until 13.5 months.

I had a large oversupply and my milk came in 24 hours after he was born even though he was a preemie.  I guess I'm trying to figure out if I will have the over supply problem again?  Could pumping from the very beginning have caused my over supply or do I just produce a lot?

Re: s/o to my "Nursing Experiences" post - more questions

  • Hm, I'm not sure.  I pumped just for 3 days initially and never had a huge oversupply, though for the first 1-2 months when I go back to work, my pumped amount is greater than how much I have to send to daycare for the baby the next day.  That levels off.  It seems like my suppy with DD is better than it was with DS because she frequently is done nursing when I still feel milk in my breasts.  DS wasn't as big as she is though- he was always skinny and tall.  Not sure whether it was just the kids being different or my supply really being bigger this time around.  I am more relaxed about it this time than I was with DS.  I was always nervous he wasn't getting enough, how long it had been between feeding, etc.  With her, I'm much more comfortable with the whole deal and know she'll get what she needs...

    Not sure I helped :(

  • My son was almost a month premature and I had so much milk I was drenching him in it.  I never really pumped.

  • I had an oversupply with both my dd and never pumped in the beginning.  I might just be you.

  • I had an oversupply with my daughter, created by nursing and pumping after nursing.  So I think pumping can definitely help supply, but also since you had a preemie, your body might have just been producing the milk it would for a normal size baby and made more.

I don't have an oversupply this time, I rarely pump which is both good and bad.  I don't have so much milk and I'm not in pain, but I also have almost nothing to go back to work with.  I'm hoping when I pump upon my return to work I'll rev up my supply.
