Torticollis questions

We just had our first PT appt for S today, and I had a couple of questions for you other MoMs who also had a DC with torticollis.

Did your child favor using one hand over the other.  S uses both hands to grasp things and can hold things in his left and right hand, but he favors using his right hand (he has a left tilt).  I hadn't really noticed this before, but the PT pointed it out and said that it sometimes happens because their other arm isn't always in their line of vision due to the tilt, just wondering if you all found this as well.

Also, did you DC always turn one way?  S has been rolling back to belly and belly to back for about 2 months now, but always seems to roll the same direction.

I am feeling a little overwhelmed the intake appt was over 2 hours long and we have a ton of stretches, but I also have a cold right now and was miserable during the appt, and found myself not always paying attention (I feel like an awful mommy now, but thankfully she wrote everything down)  Hoping I get some rest and feel better tomorrow, and REALLY hoping the boys don't get my nasty cold.

  • I don't have any experience with this.  I just wanted to say I hope you're feeling better soon and the boys don't get sick either.  Feel better!

  • Charlotte not only favored her left arm, but her left leg and her right side appeared to be much weaker.  This got my pedi worried that it might be sign of a stroke/brain damage (also in combination with some facial assymetry) - so we had a few trips to the neurologist and an MRI to rule those things out.  Thankfully, in the end, it was ruled to be just a result of the torticollis.  We were able to build strength on the right side through PT and now she's perfectly normal.  In fact, it looks like she's going to be right-handed b/c she now favors her right hand for eating/drawing/etc.

Charlotte learned to roll both ways in both directions pretty quickly.  However, she was generally delayed in rolling.  I will say that Evelyn (who had no torticollis issues or other developmental issues whatsoever) learned to roll from back to belly by turning to the right, but didn't figure out how to turn to the left or to bher belly to back until a couple months later.

As for not paying attention to all the details, I think that's very normal - particularly for a 2 hour appointment.  It's very overwhelming - and most physical therapists know that - that's why she wrote it all down!   Are you starting regular PT sessions?  If so, just ask questions at your next PT session.  If not, then give the physical therapist a call - I've found Charlotte's physical therapist very willing to talk to me about my concerns outside of appointment times.

Best of luck with everything.  I hope you're feeling better soon!

  • I don't really have any experience with this either, but I wanted to say that I'm glad EI came out and that you've found somebody who will take you seriously.

Will S be getting regular PT, or are you supposed to do all the exercises/stretches on your own? I really hope his torticollis goes away quickly!
