How do you handle DC waking/sitting up at night?

Jack has been waking up at night and immediately sitting up - it's like an automatic reaction, he sits up before he's even fully awake, but then he cries and freaks out and doesn't know how to lay back down. The other night he did this FOUR TIMES (11, 1, 3, and 5), the last two nights, it's only been twice. But I don't know what to do - normally, I'd let him fuss until he goes back to sleep, but he is waking himself up to the point he works himself up into a frenzy. I end up rocking him and trying to soothe him back to sleep, so it's an hour ordeal each time he wakes up. 

Ugh, anyone else dealing with this? I don't know what to do.

Joseph does this sometimes in his sleep. I can tell if he's awake or not, but usually it's like he's sleepwalking. If that's the case, I just go in and lay him down. It's never more than once a night, though.

My DS does this and we just go in there lay him back down, put his blankie on him and tell him goodnight it's time for bed, pat his butt for about a minute and off we go. GL
