thanks for the q-tip tip - I put some A&D on the tip and tried what you said... it worked!  At least he's a bit more comfortable now... I still don't know how to fix the real problem, which is his refusal to nurse or take BM from a bottle

Have you tried a sippy cup?  He might be ready for that instead.

I know.  DH laughed when, after DS pooped, I repeated the A&D procedure...except I just sort of used my finger around the area.  Motherhood.

He loves his sippy cup - as a toy to beat himself in the head with.  I'll try to put some BM in there after he wakes up from his nap to see if that might entice him to drink some extra.  Short of quitting my job so that I can nurse him to sleep multiple times a day, I'm out of other options  

I think he's cutting his fourth tooth (he just cut his third, and they tend to come in pairs, right?) so maybe this is just a hellish ten days that will pass without effort.
