Re: so constipated even prunes don't work?

  • Take a q-tip and put some lotion on it.  Put just the cotton part/tip into his rectum and move it around a bit.  Put on a diaper, put him in his excersaucer and wait a little bit.  Works every time for us.

  • Have you tried pears?  Prunes don't consistently work for my DS.  I usually go to pears after that.  I tend to use a fresh pear then just peel, slice and steam it then grind it up.  I feed him the whole pear.  DS loves them and this has worked a great poop out for us by morning every time.  They work much better than the prunes imo.  HTH.
  • We had to give a Fleet Enema once.  The pedi's nurse said to skip the suppositories (based on our description of her pain and what we could see trying to come out.  Fleet Enemas are supposed to work in like 5 minutes.  DDs took 20!  But it eventually did work and she hasn't needed another once since.
  • pears work really well for us. pear juice one oz. wait 30 min and then do hippy's suggestion of rectal stimulation. throw a diaper on and wait. GL

  • my doctor had told me that pears could also have the opposite effect . . did you try a couple of ounces of water and the rectal stimulation?
  • thanks for the ideas.  He's eaten three jars of prunes in three days, but only one little very hard poop came out. He's tried to poop twice today - red face, pushing, screaming, but nothing.  We've quit giving him any solid foods, but he's only taken about 3oz of expressed BM this morning (since probably about 3am).  :(

ETA: we've been offering apple juice/water combo, and pears as well.  He just went.  We'll see how big...

    ETA: nothing.  he tricked us.

  • When all else fails, we have used the Fleet babylax (glycerin enema).? I was nervous to do it, but it was actually really easy.? The results for us were practically instantaneous so be prepared if you go this route.

  • Our pedi recommended the Baby Lax and they work so quick.  Honestly the handful of times I've given them to Emerson, I've had to work quickly to get her diaper back on her before she starts to go!

  • I would start back with solids if you haven't yet, and try fruits, like apples or pears. The surefire way of getting it out of DD is fruit + jumperoo. lol.

  • We had 4 really horrible days where DD could not go to the bathroom.  Here are the tips we were given...

    Warning - kinda gross!...

DD's problem was the poo was really hard and it was such a HUGE clump that she could not pass it.  (We could see it)  When she was pushing really hard that we could actually see it, we quickly took her to the bath tub and sat her in water which helped to soften it.  It was a mess but we had to do something for her.  We tried the supoository and it never worked.  We just loaded her up on Apple Juice, Pears and Prunes mixed with Apples.  Our pedi said to really push the fruit juices (Prune juice and Apple juice) until the problem was fixed.

  • I found that probiotic yogurt for ME (I was BF) did wonders.  We tried it all, and I switched yogurts (I eat it for breakfast) by a fluke.  She even went back to being constipated when I ran out of yogurt!
  • We used to have to give DD half a glycerin suppository twice a day (per ped). It produced instant results.

  • I'd wait a day or so after the prunes. It once took DS like 36 hrs after the prunes to poop. When he did poop, he really pooped however.

  • You have to be really careful if you rely on suppositories or rectal stim every time to get them to poop... you can actually make the problem worse by weakening the rectal muscles and making it harder for them to do their job.

TMI --- Our DD also had the constipation described above, with the large, dry, hard clumps that were too big and hard to pass on her own. It was awful, but we would lay her on the changing table, and as the poop became visible, we would put vaseline on it. This helped to soften it up some. As it softened, we would acually have to help her by breaking off the softened part and then doing the vaseline all over again. After a couple of days of this, pedi put her on Colace syrup twice a day. We continued this until she was on baby food, it seems like the fruits and veggies are helping her.

Rice cereal tends to make constipation worse, so if you do rice, try switching to oatmeal or mixed grain.

  • our pedi gave DD a latex to take for 2-3 days. It helped her out a lot. Since then we have cut out bananas, giver her oatmeal instead of the rice, and only give her the vitamin every other day
  • You can also try some apple juice n water or mix it with ebm or formula. GL
  • We have had to deal with this issue for 3 monthes now :-(  We tried everything our doc suggested, prunes, peaches, no cereal, 4 oz juice/day and JUST tried white grape juice(pedi suggested apple, pear and prune) a couple weeks ago and it WORKS LIKE A CHARM!  We do 2oz in his 7oz bottle of formula 2x/day...I am just so shocked that all this time we just needed to try something different!  My doc said no suppositories at his age, not sure why!  Good Luck!  I hope it works for you too!

    ditto!

fruit and being upright works like a charm for us, too. the jumperoo is epic for getting things going!
