Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Belly sleeping

Now that DS can roll over all he does is sleep on his belly.  It makes me very nervous he likes to put his face down on the sheet with his head very slightly turned.  I try to roll him over but he goes right back to the same position. I know the risk for sids is lower but not gone until 12 months.  I am now a nervous wreck.  Anyone else have this issue?  Thanks!

Re: Belly sleeping

  • Yep, but my DD started doing it at 4 months. There isn't anything you can do about it. If he is rolling himself over then he should be fine.

  • My pedi said not to worry about it once he could roll over by himself. My DS plants his face into the mattress (turns his head just slightly) and sticks his butt way up in the air. It used to make me so nervous but, like the pp said, what can you do?
  • DD also started this a t 4 months, I tried to turn her head but she'd turn it right back.  She liked being face down!

She doesn't sleep like that anymore she usually sleeps on her back now, but when she puts herself to sleep she pulls the blanket over her face.  Nothing you can do really.

  • DS started rolling onto his belly to sleep around 4 months.  It did scare both DH and me at first.  He would have his face all smashed into the crib.  We just kept the crib free from anything.  I took the bumber out too.  We did check on him a little more for the first few weeks.  He is all over the crib now.
  • Put a fan in dc's room. It lowers the SIDS risk by 72%, due to better air circulation. And once a baby can roll by themselves there is really not a thing you can do to prevent it. I was a worry wart about it too. But, came to the realization mommy needs to sleep and not sit by the crib turning him back over.
  • DD started doing this at 3.5 months.  Once she could roll to her belly there was no keeping her on her back anymore.  I was paranoid since 2-4 months is the most likely time for SIDS to happen.  Our ped said once they could roll to their tummy there was nothing you can do.
