Lighter Periods on Metformin?

Hi Ladies -

I started Metformin about 3 months ago. At the end of October, I stopped the pill and had a 120 day cycle that ended with Provera. My last cycle was 76 days and to my surprise my body actually made its own! (yay!)

Anyway, my AF that is happening now started out as 4 days of brown spotting, then the red flow started last Friday. It has been the lightest and shortest period I've ever had and it's almost done.

I guess my question is...has anyone else experienced this while on Metformin? Or even ladies off the pill? My pill periods were always worse than this. I'm not complaining at all! Light periods are ok, right? I know that sound silly to ask....

Re: Lighter Periods on Metformin?

  • Now, I have been on metformin for a month, so I can't say this is exact, but...After only being on it for 3 weeks AF came and was a normal flow. Heavier than when I was on the pill I noticed. Hope that's kind of what you are looking for.

  • With your cycles being wonky and long, it could be from the BCP and not metformin.

  • I was actually the opposite. Mine were super super short before Metformin, and now they are what I would classify as "normal", meaning about 4 days of flow instead of 2, plus a day or two of spotting at the end.

Everyone is different, and your body could be adjusting. See what happens next month. My 3rd month on Met was amazingly different (in good ways), and now so far the 4th has been totally different from that one.

My periods seem to be about the same number of days as far as length goes but my flow is definately heavier now being on the met than what they were on BC.
