Big baby at 34 weeks

Hi all. I know i dont post too often but i'm hoping someone may have some insight. I'm a FTM, in 2 days I will be 34 weeks. Today I had my 3rd tri ultrasound. Baby boy is doing great, however he is already 6.2 pounds and his head and abdominal are both in 96th percentile (between my GD & the big heads that run on DH's side, I'm not surprised). I am supposed to go back in a few weeks to check the growth. They warned me that if he gets too big they may take him early.

Have any 2nd time mom's had experience with this? Any tips or stories to share? I find that knowing what to expect helps. I understand there is a chance everything will be normal and baby will show up when he's ready, but I like to be prepared.
Thanks in advance.

  • My baby was measuring 5.14 at 34 weeks and no one was concerned. I didn't get a measurement for his head. Try not to worry at this point, the sonogram may also have a margin of error.

  • I actually heard something similar today... My LO is measuring 6.7 at 34 weeks. I was a little worried but my mom said that they aren't always accurate and no one at the drs. Office seemed to be concerned.
  • Thanks. I know anything can happen, and his weight maybe fine. I'm not crazy worried If it happens, My doctor, his team, & hospital are fantastic. I guess I was just looking for people's experiences with the process of delivering in such a case where they decide to "take the baby early" as it was put to me earlier, whatever the reason may be.

  • No experience, but I'm in the same boat. I'm 34 weeks and he's measuring 6 lbs, my belly is measuring 40 weeks, and I am going back in 3 weeks to check growth.

The ultrasound dr asked me like 5 times "you don't have GD? Did you pass the first time or no? Do you have a history of diabetes in your family? Are you SURE you don't have GD?"..... I'm 5 ft tall and from the back you can't tell I am pregnant (belly wise).... I think he's just big and I'm ALL belly!

  • My belly is supposedly measuring about 3 weeks ahead but when I had my growth scan baby looked fine, just a little big. The tech said she was about a week ahead, weighing 5lbs at 33 weeks. The following week my doctor said that she was in the 50th percentile at 34 weeks and that they weren't worried at all. Also there is that whole margin for error thing, they say ultrasound measurements can be off by a pound either way so you're probably fine.

  • Around 36-37 weeks, DS was "measuring" at about 7+lbs. He was born full term 40 weeks at 6lbs 12 oz. I'd bear in mind at this point it's a rough estimate and they can be off by up to 2 lbs either way.

  • They said my son measured 8lb at 38wks.he was born at 8lb 2oz at 40w5d.
  • I'm in a simular situation today at 32 weeks baby is measuring 5lbs 9oz and in the 93 percentile.

Guess they want us to just be surprised!

The doctor to us after we've delivered: "Here ya go Sinner and Nic, you each get a 10 pound baby! Hope your vag is ok!"

Or... "guys, GUESS how much your babies weighed?! JUST GUESS IT'LL BE FUN!"

my doc has me do 1 U/S a trimester. I'm only getting the one in 3 weeks because of his supposed size. I've got gestational diabetes so I guess they are afraid he'll get too big. I was shocked when she gave me percentiles, I didn't know they could do that.

I only had a growth u/s bc my fundal measurement has been 4 weeks ahead. I had an u/s a month ago to check on my lay lowing placenta. Not having an u/s is good in that there haven't been any concerns.

I only got an extra growth ultrasound because I was referred to an MFM. My regular OB/midwife practice wouldn't have done any ultrasounds after the 20 week anatomy scan as a standard practice. I agree not having the extra ultrasound is a good thing -- just means everything is normal!

  • I get growth scans because I have gestational diabetes. They alternate fluid level checks and full growth scans

Sometimes I get one a week or every 2 or 3 weeks it depends on my numbers.

With my first I only had one at 36 weeks because I had gained 50

With my 2nd I had a few because he had VSD (hole in heart)
  • First pregnancy we had multiple u/s's to check for different things. This time we've also had three u/s's (at another clinic where the OB sends its patients) and then a few times on the portable u/s machine in the last few weeks in the OB's Office.

  • I was told multiple times that DS2 would be 10lbs or more and that his head was in the 99th percentile. I was told just to schedule a c/s. I refused, and I'm glad I did-as PP stated, the numbers are just estimates and can me quite inaccurate. He did have a big head, but I'm not sure a few cm's here or there make much difference at that point. He was 8lbs 14oz.

  • I'm measuring on the small side 2 weeks behind and she's 4 pounds 11 oz. Had my growth ultrasound Monday @ 35 weeks. They are not considered because she is proportionally small and my other two boys were 6 pounds 13 oz and 7 pounds 9 oz.
