Hi all, sorry this is late. I'm in the field so this will be short and sweet. How are you and LO doing? Any questions or experiences to share? Hope you all are doing well!
The past month has been great. Can't remember the last time I posted. We've been super busy finding a new apartment and getting ready to move Definitely want to thank all of you for encouraging me to stick with it when I was feeling frustrated.
I had cut gluten out right before all of LO's symptoms went away and just tested it out a couple weeks ago. He is fine with wheat so that's exciting!
I went out to eat and was told all was well with my food--no dairy or soy. Well...they lied. LO broke out in a rash immediately after out next nursing session. I found out that there was a little bit of soy sauce in what I had. I felt just awful. This was about a week ago and it's going away now and he's itching less. As pissed as I was that the restaurant sabotaged us, we now know definitively that baby cannot have soy!
So I was wondering about something and I couldn't find too much about it on dr google. So dairy is the most common intolerance and then about 50% of babies with a dairy intolerance are also soy intolerant, right? Is it ever that baby is JUST intolerant of soy or is that really uncommon? I was thinking of testing dairy in a month or two but just curious if anyone has experience with just a soy intolerance.
Hope all the mamas and babies are happy and healthy!
We are doing well. I am finally starting to feel more comfortable with the diet and less deprived (it's only been 3 1/2 months ). I've also come to terms with not being able to use the milk I pumped before the diagnosis. I had planned to hold onto it to retry at 6 months, but it doesn't look like that's a good idea with her recent issues with milk from when I had been dairy-free for a few weeks. So I've started the process to donate the 150oz that have been hanging out in the freezer. LO seems to still be recovering from her reaction to the milk frozen in December with green semi-explosive poops, but her rash on her cheeks is almost gone.
@MaineMama33 I'm sorry you had that experience eating out! I feel like something similar happens every time I eat out so we've mostly been staying home. A friend did invite me to lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings next week, and I was surprised/excited to see they have several dairy/soy-free menu items. I've never eaten there before, but hopefully it turns out ok
Hi - can I join? LO was just diagnosed with MPI about a week and a half ago after blood in her diapers, on-going fussiness, sleep issues, and itchy eyes became increasingly more prevalent. She is 12 weeks and I think I have seen a slight mood improvement and no more visible blood in the diaper since cutting all dairy. My pedi is having me hold off on cutting soy until we see how she reacts to the dairy elimination.
I've been dealing with the guilt of making my baby feel so sick but am really dedicated to breastfeeding so I'm hoping this new diet will do the trick. I'm not feeling too deprived by the diet but mostly am worried about getting enough calories to maintain my supply. I've basically been living on chipotle, oatmeal, and salmon / rice / veggies!
Any advice for a newly joining mama to your ranks?
@amichelle723 It's funny you say you are getting used to it bc I feel like the opposite has happened with me! I've been on the diet almost 3 months and I have been totally fine except now I'm starting to have cravings. Like for a super cheesy quesadilla or artichoke dip with lots of dairy product in it.... Drool. Since I'm doing it for my little man I'll never give in but I can fantasize...
And yeah... Eating out is dumb. I really just need to stick with whole foods I can actually see the ingredients of, ie salads, bc I just don't trust these people.
I guess that would be my advice to you @cbowl-- beware of eating out! Although I'm sure you already know that.
Today marks our first week without dairy, soy, eggs and nuts. Her diapers are still diarrhea or full of mucus (no more visible blood though!). Her mood and comfort level does seem to be a little better (less arching/stiffness) but it may be too soon to tell. The red rash that I believe is related also seems lighter the last couple days. I hope the diapers start showing improvement next.
Yesterday, I made DD1 and I oatmeal for breakfast. It was still a little too hot so I added a splash of milk to just hers to cool it off. I did a tester bite to check the temp before I realized what I did. I instantly burst into tears! DH had no idea what was happening but I felt like I threw my first week down the drain. DD2 was miserable yesterday afternoon and had a HUGE blowout diarrhea diaper today, so probably related.
It just dawned on me that all the pumped milk in my freezer from the first few engorgement weeks is not going to be okay to use. There's a lot too! I go back to work in 5 weeks and now I'm starting to panic about preparing. When should I start pumping again for a new stash? Once I see true improvement may still be a ways out. Ugh, I'm not even sure if it's dairy, soy, eggs, nuts or something else....or all of them.
Things are looking better for us! Although, she is super sensitive to soy, and it seems soy lecithin and soybean oil cause her to break out in bumps on her face. I have been enjoying Enjoy Life chocolate chips! Just by themselves has been an awesome treat!
We are doing good. Week 3 for us so we are just starting to notice a bigger change. LO's skin finally looks better and eczema seems to have cleared up.
I am really starting to miss pizza just like everyone else. The good news though is that I've lost 5 lbs in the last 3 weeks and I suspect it's from cutting dairy. It makes me feel better about it all.
We are doing well. I tried soy and LO didn't react so I was really happy about that. I think I'll wait a week and try it again. Ive been ok about maintaining such a strict diet for the last 9 months but lately I've been craving foods that are off limits. I've looked at MSPI mama.com and was wondering if any of you ladies know of other good blogs for dairy/soy free moms or kids.
We just took a short vacation, so three days of restaurant meals. I was as careful as possible with grilled chicken breast or steak with a potato or rice. I think my husband is having a harder time than I . I vetoed his favorite pizza, burgers and custard.

I was given the advice to save the milk to retry after 6 months when she may have outgrown the intolerance. But DD will be 6 months in a few weeks and for several reasons I don't think she'll be able to take the milk. I also had a lot (I had an oversupply early on that pumping probably made worse), and I didn't want it to expire and go to waste, so I'm donating it. It's bittersweet because I'm sad I can't use it for DD and I feel like pumping it took away time from her, but knowing they use it for preemies in the NICU makes me feel better.
I waited 2 weeks off dairy to start pumping again, which in retrospect wasn't long enough. DD does ok getting that milk just once a week but when I tried giving her one bag daily she reacted. So that tells me it still has milk protein in it. I've heard anywhere from 2-5 weeks so I guess trial and error?
@MaineMama33 I have not personally heard of a baby that is just SPI, but I don't know whether or not it's possible. I do think DS outgrew his MPI earlier than his SPI.
@RingOfFire11 Oh, I am sorry about the milk. It happens. Re: your pumped stash, I know how frustrating it is to have to get rid of older milk. Personally, I just didn't bother building up much of a stash as I was eliminating foods. I would have maybe 1 week's supply at a time, because it took me awhile to cut everything out of my diet that I needed to and it just didn't make sense to stash away a bunch of milk I might not be able to use. I know a lot of mama's feel like they need to build up this huge stash before they go back to work, but we did just fine with a little bit of milk available for the first week back, then whatever I pumped while we were apart was used for the next day. You could start pumping a little bit every day starting, say, 2 weeks before you go back to work, and you'd probably be fine, depending how long your work days will be. You might post the question to the entire board and see if you can get more specific advice. HTH!

We are good. We had a follow up with the GI today, and all of DD's stools were negative! Yay! Her reflux has been awful though. It makes me feel terrible. We also went to dinner this weekend, and the waitress assured me that they take food allergies seriously. I ordered a salad with grilled chicken (made sure to remind her that the chicken could not be grilled on a griddle that has had butter used on it for anything else.) When the food arrived to our table I asked her to double check the salad dressing for me because I am crazy. She came back to say everything was fine. Well it could be a coincidence, but DD's cheeks had finally cleared up and a few hours later they were all rashy again. I felt guilty.
@camedowncrushing Yay for no blood! I hope you can get the reflux under control soon, and the rashy face. I think we can all relate to the feelings of guilt. Hang in there! >:D<
amichelle723 ,good to know! I appreciate the advice. The once per week route totally makes sense. I definitely am going to wait till I'm on the diet longer before starting pumping again but if it takes 5ish weeks, I will probably try that out too.
rocknrollfriend , you rock! I'm very appreciative to have you as a resource here. It's reassuring to hear you only needed about a week's worth of stash. That seems totally doable and gives me more time with the diet first. I'll take your advice and ask the board too.
I have a new question, lol. I ate steak a couple days ago and DD2 has been showing a lot of symptoms again that we're improving (arching, extreme fussiness, congestion and her reflux is suddenly much worse!). Has anyone else with a dairy issue also needed to avoid beef? I read they can be related but was curious if anyone else here has this issue or maybe this was a coincidence.
ETA: she also had 10 poops yesterday (the day after I ate beef), opposed to the normal 2-6.
May I join? My LO is 3 months old and we have been battling diarrhea, congestion, and eczema for about a month now. I finally took him in today because the eczema was worse than ever.
Dr. explained that it could very well be a milk allergy and to start there. I'm nervous about having to change my diet so drastically but I am definitely going to do whatever it takes to help LO.

Yes, some mamas who avoid dairy also have to avoid beef. Could the beef have been cooked with any dairy?

Welcome! See my advice to our other newcomer, above. It is hard at first but really, it becomes much easier with time. GL!

No, we cooked it at home and it only had salt and pepper on it. I'm starting to think it wasn't coincidental and I need to avoid beef then. I wonder if beef stays in the system as long as dairy... Hopefully not because this poor baby is miserable and I feel helpless.

Oh, I hope she feels better soon. I don't know how long it might take for beef, hopefully it will pass through quickly. GL!

@Cbowl Welcome! Definitely check out our post archives at mspimoms.blogspot.com. You should find lots of helpful info there.
My other staple advice is to read labels like a detective, and get to know hidden dairy ingredients. Here's a good list: https://www.godairyfree.org/dairy-free-grocery-shopping-guide/dairy-ingredient-list-2
