~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods?

3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

  • @manausmom and @pmduggan01 I saw you checked in to an earlier thread. Welcome! Let's talk here. :)

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? On second thought, I'm not so sure DS was ok with me eaten a bit of soy last week. His poops were kinda shiny this weekend, and he pooped like, so many times! I think I will just give him some soy directly to look for a clear reaction.

    2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? I had to avoid wheat, eggs, cabbage, and coconut milk/oil based on clear reactions in DS. I also cut out peanuts and shellfish just because they were easy (for me). I never had to cut out other nuts. As a sub for wheat, I ate a lot of other grains. I especially liked baking with barley flour. Lots of oatmeal for breakfast. A couple of gluten-free brands for bread; I was wary of the xantham gum in a lot of gluten-free products so I stayed away from those. For a milky substance, I drank/cooked with a lot of rice milk and home-made almond milk. Sunflower seed butter was a good pb sub (I actually still eat a lot of it).

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today!

  • I'm sorry it turns out your LO did have a reaction to soy, @rocknrollfriend. Wow! You had to cut coconut on top of all of that? You are a strong woman. I feel like I live off of coconuts sometimes. I just love coconut oil so much. And I found this amazing ice cream substitute called coconut bliss. I bought their chocolate ice cream today and it is taking care of some serious chocolate cravings I've been having. I also bought some enjoy life chocolate chips to add to my oatmeal banana cookies. Fabulous, easy kid friendly cookie recipe--old banana and half a cup of rolled oats mashed together, bake in the oven at 350. Pretty tasty for 2 ingredients. Looking forward to adding chocolate.

    1. We are doing really well. I feel like I see light at the end of the tunnel. LOs poops are finally NOT green or mucousy. He's still got a little bit of a rash on his face that keeps him up all night trying to scratch but I'm crossing my fingers that will clear up really
    soon.

    2. I just cut gluten out a week ago in addition to the dairy and soy and I'm wondering if that contributed to his progress at all. I certainly won't be doing any testing any time soon, I don't want to screw up something that could be fixing the problem. I've made coconut milk and flour using coconut flakes before, and then used those ingredients as a sub in recipes. I've also made almond milk/flour. Mostly Ive just tried to simplify a lot of my eating in general and not focus on "substituting" things. Sometimes I have to though. Especially to satisfy my occasional sweet tooth.

    3. Not really a question, more of a vent, I guess. I am seriously frustrated with my lack of weight loss. I feel like I eat pretty well, I run about 3 miles 4-5 days a week and try to do squats/lunges/planks throughout the day and I have this roll of fat that will just not go away. Argh!!! I don't count calories but maybe I should start. I think I might be eating too much, even though it's all pretty healthy stuff. I guess this has nothing to do with mspi so sorry about that.
  • I don't know why it has me as @MaineMama33 on my phone and @caleyton3 on my computer :-/ So weird. I use the same login info for both...
  • 1. We are doing well; DD did have some slightly green, slimy poops this weekend but she also has a cold so not sure if it's from that. I feel like she's had a pretty constant runny nose since Jan 1, I guess that goes hand in hand with daycare.
    2. I've cut out peanuts in addition to dairy and soy. Not sure if it helped or not, again because of the constant runny nose......but I do plan to wait another week or so before doing a trial with peanuts.
    3. No questions, but I did want to say that I just discovered Larabars! I've read on here that some of y'all eat them since they are dairy and soy free, so I bought a box last week and love them! Kroger had the individual ones on sale for 10/$10 so I got a bunch to try several different flavors. So far cashew cookie is my favorite but I still have lots to try. Thanks for the tip whoever posted about them!

Ha! Good to know you're the same person. :) How old is your LO? Has he hit the 6 mo growth spurt yet? The extra nursing might help you burn more calories. I'd say just keep up the good work (that's a lot of running!) and be patient. Nursing mamas sometimes hold on to the weight until their body is ready to let it go.
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are ok.

    2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? Shellfish and egg. We just have regular fish i/o shellfish. I haven't had much luck subbing egg. I've tried a few diff things and none have binded enough so baked goods end fall apart. I know others have had success so idk if I'm doing something wrong or if it depends on what you're trying to make.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I tried a small amount of baked in egg twice and DS' poop was partially green both times. But he didn't act any more irritable than the normal terrible twos behavior and I didn't see any blood. He didn't eat anything green so I'm just wondering if this means to still stay away from egg or keep trying it. Any thoughts?

  • 1. I'm doing ok, though it's been a little stressful making sure there are foods available for me to eat. It's ok when I'm home but being out and about is hard. I'm going to try the Larabars mentioned in a PP. LOs poops are finally more yellow than green, a little more solid but they are still pretty slimy. I am obsessed with poop ;)

    2. I also cut out peanuts because I was eating a ton of peanut butter and was worried that might be a factor also. I sub almond butter mixed with honey. To be honest it's not good but it's calories and something I can carry on the go.

    3. We have been doing really well until I went to TCBY. I drove all the way across town to try there almond milk soft serve (dairy free / soy free). I double checked allergy undo online then again in the store, I even to the server LOs intolerance. Anyway long story short she served part of my order with regular frozen yogurt. I'm very lactose intolerant so I knew pretty quickly after eating what had happened. I'm just so upset that I even tried it! My gut kept saying not to eat it, the girl was honestly not really with it. Anyway though LO has only had a slightly more green poop she has been fussy and really gassy. Sorry for such a long rant but I'm just really upset.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

We're doing alright. DH and I are (finally!) going out on a real date on Friday, so I'm trying to find a restaurant that's safe for me to eat at. So far, it's looking like our only option is a Mongolian grill place. DH isn't crazy about it, but I'm pretty happy to have found anything around here at all.

DS's skin is breaking out again. I haven't eaten anything outside of the usual, so at first I was really puzzled, until I was reading an allergy blog entry somewhere and learned that tocopherol (Vitamin E) is soy-derived. And it's in the lotion we bought because I thought it would be better for his skin (fragrance-free, organic, gluten-free). Ugh.

In other news, we've been wheat-free for almost two weeks now, and nut-free for almost a week (I wasn't going to, but the only nut product I use is almond milk anyway, so when we ran out I went ahead and switched to coconut for now). We're seeing some progress! About half of his poops are mucus-free, and are starting to be yellow more often.

    2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods?

So far, we're also avoiding wheat, peanuts, and tree nuts.

For the most part, I'm not really trying to substitute them. I've tried gluten-free bread products and haven't been impressed enough to keep them around, although I'm trying out some different pastas this week.

As for nuts, I didn't really use them much before, although I've been using some sunflower seed butter here and there, and I like adding pumpkin seeds to recipes as well.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

I'm going to be asking the pediatrician as well, but thought I'd ask it here, too. If DS is having reactions to soy even in topical applications (like the Vitamin E in his lotion), am I looking at the possibility of an actual allergy vs. just an intolerance?

  • I'm sorry about the slip up, @izzies.  I can definitely empathize.  It feels horrible and you dwell on it but try not to beat yourself up.  This happened to me a few weeks ago and I just kept reminding myself that there was nothing I could do about it and to just be more diligent in the future.

I swear if you're craving ice cream you have got to try SO delicious coconut ice cream or Coconut Bliss. I found both at the grocery store. They are gluten/dairy/soy free and really delicious.  There's a slight coconut flavor but it's not too, too strong.

  • Oh! And @rocknrollfriend--my LO will be 6 months tomorrow. Interested to see if the growth spurt will help me burn a bit more! Thanks for the encouragement :)
  • I am super sad to be joining this check in. We suspected cows milk allergy because DS1 has it and I feel confident to say that not only does dd2 have it, but it seems worse. I visited with an LC in Sunday and she said I should eliminate all dairy in my diet to see if it makes a difference. She is really fussy and has slimy poo, eczema, other rashes, itchy nose, lots of spit up, and projectile vomiting. I feel so bad for her. So now the elimination journey starts for me. I will miss cheese so much.

I don't plan on eliminating soy just yet as my son isn't allergic to it.

Burning question: how many days until LO starts to feel improved? I know it will take weeks to eliminate altogether but will she feel noticeably better soon?
  • Thanks for the welcome @rocknrollfriend. I posted this in an older MSPI check-in last night as my intro:

After a food-allergy blood panel last week, DS was found to be allergic to dairy, soy, wheat, corn, egg, peanut, and sesame seeds (all moderate to high). He has an appointment with the allergy and asthma specialist at the local children's hospital. In the meantime, we are both on the elimination diet.

    1. How are you doing? Today I'm feeling overwhelmed. It didn't help that I went grocery shopping hungry. I'm sure I'll feel better in the morning.

How is your LO doing? Maybe he is having a growth spurt or something, but he was nursing like crazy this afternoon and evening. But he's in good spirits, and I'm glad he didn't have a reaction to anything.

    2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? Yes: eggs, wheat, corn, sesame seeds, and peanuts. I'm also leery of tree nuts, though the doctor hasn't told me to eliminate them yet.

If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? We are in our first week of the elimination of these foods. I've been using rice milk for LO's cereal, oatmeal is still my breakfast. I've been cooking lots of whole foods/meals from scratch and reading every label like crazy. I'm still searching for good substitutes.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I'm open to suggestions and resources. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the encouragement @MaineMamma33 ! I have tried the SO delishious before and LOVED it but it's hard to find sometimes! I'm going to speak to the manager at the local grocery store to see they will order it
  • @beckyj2013
I'm so glad someone understands my poop obsession ;)
  • @lovelainie I know this isn't exactly the same as the vitamin e, but... DS used to get a rash if milk even touched him ( like DH kissing his cheek when he had just drank coffee ). However he outgrew the problems with dairy when we tried at age 2.

@Beckyj2013 sorry to hear about your supply. Have you tried boosting it? I had great success boosting mine with fenugreek 3 pills 3x a day, goats rue, oatmeal, enough calcium and. protein in my diet and tons of water. It was a lot of pumping and persistance but paid off.

I would stay away if it were me, because before I cut out wheat W's only symptom was the poop. He acted fine, had stopped spitting up so much and wasn't so gassy, etc. But he still had the gross poop and occasional small amounts of blood, which is what the doc's were most concerned about.
  • mainemama33 I am so with you on the frustration on not losing weight.  DD2 is only 8 weeks, but I lost 15 lbs within the first 10 days after birth.  I have been stuck since.  With DD1 I had only 5lbs left to lose at this point.  I feel like all I eat are salads and occasionally Chipotle!  Ha ha ha.  I want the weight off!  It feels like it should be coming off easy.

DD is good.  Since her last bout of bloody stools last Saturday her stools have been perfect in color and consistency.

@Sarelnad  I noticed a difference within five days or so on gas and spitting.  Hopefully you will see progress soon!

I am dairy, soy, wheat and egg free.  We had our appt with the GI.  He assured me I am okay to eat things with soy lethicin and oil because there aren't any proteins in either.  So I have reintroduced those into my diet, and so far everything is just fine.  He also told me I should consider adding wheat in when I feel up to it.  He thinks my pedi may have told me to eliminate wheat a bit early, and since I saw the biggest improvement after eggs I may be okay.  I am going to wait until my next appt with him in two weeks before doing anything.  I want her stool to be tested again before I make any changes.

Welcome! I am sorry you have to join us. Most mamas do notice an improvement in symptoms within a few days, though there can be a back and forth during the 3-5 week elimination phase. GL!
  • Also @Izzies and @beckyj2013 add me to the poop-obsessed. I too have had poop photos on my phone. My pedi encouraged it! :P
  • Didn't see this yesterday!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
I feel like I'm hitting a wall. I want everything that I can't have. We're going to dinner next month for DH's 28th birthday, and this place has the best crab dip. But I can't eat it : (

    2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods?
Still on the TED. We tried to re-introduce soy, and it backfired, so I'm still waiting for his stools to be normal. I think by the end of the week we should be good. I'm going to try wheat next.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
When do you try to reintroduce dairy? Is there a point in trying when we know for sure that he's intolerant of soy?

@mainemama33, where did you find the coconut ice cream? They didn't have it at the grocery store by me. I'm thinking of making a special trip to Whole Foods to see if they have it. I need something sweet!

I know how frustrating "the wall" can be. Get some yummy substitutes for what you're craving! If you need specific suggestions, ask us. :)

I didn't try reintroducing dairy until DS was much older. I accidentally had some when he was 13 mo and he reacted. I didn't try again until about.. 15 mo or so? Then he was fine. I'd say since he reacted when you tried soy last week (?), I'd say that's a pretty clear intolerance. Some pedis say you can try to reintro soy/dairy around 6 to 9 mo, and most babies outgrow the intolerances by 12 mo.

  • Hey, I did find a potato chip that has THREE ingredients (potato, olive oil, and sea salt) and 0 allergens: Golden Canyon Olive Oil Kettle Chips. I found them at Sprouts, which is sort of like a Whole Foods–type store. They have other flavors, but this one was crazy good.

  • Hi there! Joining the board- my dd was 6 weeks on Tuesday. We are thinking she is milk protein and maybe (?) soy too. Our symptoms are green poops, and we had a few bloody stools. We went to the pedi Tuesday, one bm tested had no blood, the next one did. She also had 8-12 bms a day. I started milk free on Monday, and have been soy free since Tuesday afternoon. We have not had any blood since the dr office and her bms have decreased in frequency. We are doing the two week "test" and then re-evaluating. The one item I miss most is my Creme brûlée coffee creamer!! I have started using so delicious French vanilla, but it's just not the same! I look forward to learning from you all !
  • @Jackapatamus Welcome! My DS had negative diapers much of the time too, because he never had much blood in his stool. Our main symptom was the green/mucousy poop. Have you cut all hidden dairy and soy too? Let us know if you need any help. Browsing our past check ins on the blog is a great resource too. GL!
  • @rocknrollfriend. Thank you! Is hidden milk- whey and casein? If so then yes! My son had a milk allergy- but it wasn't diagnosed until he was 15 months. So I'm familiar with looking for milk, but not familiar at all with soy (he was fine with soy) I'm trying to learn as much as I can, and will definitely check out past posts!
  • @Jackapatamus Yes whey and casein and lots of other things that I'm sure you know about with the milk allergy! Here's a good resource for ingredients that could be hidden soy: https://www.eatingwithfoodallergies.com/soyallergy.html

    Thank you!!!

  • @rocknrollfriend thanks for the feedback on egg. I think I will wait a while.

  • My son had some mucus in his diaper on Wednesday. I'm working now on cutting on soybean oil in case he is sensitive to that as well.  It's in everything though including the humus and Wheat Thins that were one of my go to snacks.  And I was at the grocery store looking at spaghetti sauce and it's in almost all of those as well.  It's crazy to me how many things have soy in them.
I did make a trip to Trader Joe's.  I've been so hungry in the mornings (the oatmeal is not enough) so I got some of there Chicken Maple sausages to add some protein to breakfast.  They are so good if anyone has a TJ's near them.
This recipe was in my local newspaper this week.  I'm thinking it will be good to make for lunch for the week.  Only thing to be careful with is the chicken broth as some have whey in them.
