Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 2/18
@manausmom and @pmduggan01 I saw you checked in to an earlier thread. Welcome! Let's talk here.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? On second thought, I'm not so sure DS was ok with me eaten a bit of soy last week. His poops were kinda shiny this weekend, and he pooped like, so many times! I think I will just give him some soy directly to look for a clear reaction.
2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? I had to avoid wheat, eggs, cabbage, and coconut milk/oil based on clear reactions in DS. I also cut out peanuts and shellfish just because they were easy (for me). I never had to cut out other nuts. As a sub for wheat, I ate a lot of other grains. I especially liked baking with barley flour. Lots of oatmeal for breakfast. A couple of gluten-free brands for bread; I was wary of the xantham gum in a lot of gluten-free products so I stayed away from those. For a milky substance, I drank/cooked with a lot of rice milk and home-made almond milk. Sunflower seed butter was a good pb sub (I actually still eat a lot of it).
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today!
1. We are doing really well. I feel like I see light at the end of the tunnel. LOs poops are finally NOT green or mucousy. He's still got a little bit of a rash on his face that keeps him up all night trying to scratch but I'm crossing my fingers that will clear up really
soon.
2. I just cut gluten out a week ago in addition to the dairy and soy and I'm wondering if that contributed to his progress at all. I certainly won't be doing any testing any time soon, I don't want to screw up something that could be fixing the problem. I've made coconut milk and flour using coconut flakes before, and then used those ingredients as a sub in recipes. I've also made almond milk/flour. Mostly Ive just tried to simplify a lot of my eating in general and not focus on "substituting" things. Sometimes I have to though. Especially to satisfy my occasional sweet tooth.
3. Not really a question, more of a vent, I guess. I am seriously frustrated with my lack of weight loss. I feel like I eat pretty well, I run about 3 miles 4-5 days a week and try to do squats/lunges/planks throughout the day and I have this roll of fat that will just not go away. Argh!!! I don't count calories but maybe I should start. I think I might be eating too much, even though it's all pretty healthy stuff. I guess this has nothing to do with mspi so sorry about that.
Ha! Good to know you're the same person.
2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? Shellfish and egg. We just have regular fish i/o shellfish. I haven't had much luck subbing egg. I've tried a few diff things and none have binded enough so baked goods end fall apart. I know others have had success so idk if I'm doing something wrong or if it depends on what you're trying to make.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I tried a small amount of baked in egg twice and DS' poop was partially green both times. But he didn't act any more irritable than the normal terrible twos behavior and I didn't see any blood. He didn't eat anything green so I'm just wondering if this means to still stay away from egg or keep trying it. Any thoughts?
2. I also cut out peanuts because I was eating a ton of peanut butter and was worried that might be a factor also. I sub almond butter mixed with honey. To be honest it's not good but it's calories and something I can carry on the go.
3. We have been doing really well until I went to TCBY. I drove all the way across town to try there almond milk soft serve (dairy free / soy free). I double checked allergy undo online then again in the store, I even to the server LOs intolerance. Anyway long story short she served part of my order with regular frozen yogurt. I'm very lactose intolerant so I knew pretty quickly after eating what had happened. I'm just so upset that I even tried it! My gut kept saying not to eat it, the girl was honestly not really with it. Anyway though LO has only had a slightly more green poop she has been fussy and really gassy. Sorry for such a long rant but I'm just really upset.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
We're doing alright. DH and I are (finally!) going out on a real date on Friday, so I'm trying to find a restaurant that's safe for me to eat at. So far, it's looking like our only option is a Mongolian grill place. DH isn't crazy about it, but I'm pretty happy to have found anything around here at all.
DS's skin is breaking out again. I haven't eaten anything outside of the usual, so at first I was really puzzled, until I was reading an allergy blog entry somewhere and learned that tocopherol (Vitamin E) is soy-derived. And it's in the lotion we bought because I thought it would be better for his skin (fragrance-free, organic, gluten-free). Ugh.
In other news, we've been wheat-free for almost two weeks now, and nut-free for almost a week (I wasn't going to, but the only nut product I use is almond milk anyway, so when we ran out I went ahead and switched to coconut for now). We're seeing some progress! About half of his poops are mucus-free, and are starting to be yellow more often.
2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods?
So far, we're also avoiding wheat, peanuts, and tree nuts.
For the most part, I'm not really trying to substitute them. I've tried gluten-free bread products and haven't been impressed enough to keep them around, although I'm trying out some different pastas this week.
As for nuts, I didn't really use them much before, although I've been using some sunflower seed butter here and there, and I like adding pumpkin seeds to recipes as well.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
I'm going to be asking the pediatrician as well, but thought I'd ask it here, too. If DS is having reactions to soy even in topical applications (like the Vitamin E in his lotion), am I looking at the possibility of an actual allergy vs. just an intolerance?
I'm sorry about the slip up, @izzies. I can definitely empathize. It feels horrible and you dwell on it but try not to beat yourself up. This happened to me a few weeks ago and I just kept reminding myself that there was nothing I could do about it and to just be more diligent in the future.
I swear if you're craving ice cream you have got to try SO delicious coconut ice cream or Coconut Bliss. I found both at the grocery store. They are gluten/dairy/soy free and really delicious. There's a slight coconut flavor but it's not too, too strong.
I don't plan on eliminating soy just yet as my son isn't allergic to it.
Burning question: how many days until LO starts to feel improved? I know it will take weeks to eliminate altogether but will she feel noticeably better soon?
After a food-allergy blood panel last week, DS was found to be allergic to dairy, soy, wheat, corn, egg, peanut, and sesame seeds (all moderate to high). He has an appointment with the allergy and asthma specialist at the local children's hospital. In the meantime, we are both on the elimination diet.
1. How are you doing? Today I'm feeling overwhelmed. It didn't help that I went grocery shopping hungry. I'm sure I'll feel better in the morning.
How is your LO doing? Maybe he is having a growth spurt or something, but he was nursing like crazy this afternoon and evening. But he's in good spirits, and I'm glad he didn't have a reaction to anything.
2. Are you avoiding anything other than dairy and/or soy? Yes: eggs, wheat, corn, sesame seeds, and peanuts. I'm also leery of tree nuts, though the doctor hasn't told me to eliminate them yet.
If you are, what are some good alternatives to those foods? We are in our first week of the elimination of these foods. I've been using rice milk for LO's cereal, oatmeal is still my breakfast. I've been cooking lots of whole foods/meals from scratch and reading every label like crazy. I'm still searching for good substitutes.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I'm open to suggestions and resources. Thanks!
I'm so glad someone understands my poop obsession
@Beckyj2013 sorry to hear about your supply. Have you tried boosting it? I had great success boosting mine with fenugreek 3 pills 3x a day, goats rue, oatmeal, enough calcium and. protein in my diet and tons of water. It was a lot of pumping and persistance but paid off.
DD is good. Since her last bout of bloody stools last Saturday her stools have been perfect in color and consistency.
@Sarelnad I noticed a difference within five days or so on gas and spitting. Hopefully you will see progress soon!
I am dairy, soy, wheat and egg free. We had our appt with the GI. He assured me I am okay to eat things with soy lethicin and oil because there aren't any proteins in either. So I have reintroduced those into my diet, and so far everything is just fine. He also told me I should consider adding wheat in when I feel up to it. He thinks my pedi may have told me to eliminate wheat a bit early, and since I saw the biggest improvement after eggs I may be okay. I am going to wait until my next appt with him in two weeks before doing anything. I want her stool to be tested again before I make any changes.
Welcome! I am sorry you have to join us. Most mamas do notice an improvement in symptoms within a few days, though there can be a back and forth during the 3-5 week elimination phase. GL!
I know how frustrating "the wall" can be. Get some yummy substitutes for what you're craving! If you need specific suggestions, ask us.
I didn't try reintroducing dairy until DS was much older. I accidentally had some when he was 13 mo and he reacted. I didn't try again until about.. 15 mo or so? Then he was fine. I'd say since he reacted when you tried soy last week (?), I'd say that's a pretty clear intolerance. Some pedis say you can try to reintro soy/dairy around 6 to 9 mo, and most babies outgrow the intolerances by 12 mo.
Thank you!!!
