~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI?

3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 1/20

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? DS has a cold, so his face is a little rashy. DH thinks the zyrtec isn't helping at all. I think it's helping a little. sigh. I am fine, just waiting to catch this cold. :/

    2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? Nope! No one else has even heard of it.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today!

@mrsking218 I saw your reply in last week's thread - I hope your LO is starting to feel better! Some moms do experience ups and downs with the MSPI symptoms while they're in the first few weeks of cutting out dairy/soy. And, I think even I'd be a little cranky if I had to do nebulizer treatments. :) Hang in there!

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?  DD's poops are returning to normal color.  This makes me happy.  I haven't seen any blood in her stool since Saturday.  I am okay, but I am struggling with the wheat elimination.  I remember when DD1 was diagnosed with MSPI I had a hard first week or so, and then it became much easier to find foods to eat.  I am hoping the same will be true this time around.  I have been eating eggs for breakfast, guacamole with tortilla chips every day for lunch, and some vegetable with plain chicken for dinner.  I have also ate an entire bag of chocolate chips (dairy free brand) for snacks...I am just trying to keep my calories up so I don't lose my supply.

    2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? I have a few friends who have dealt with it when my DD1 had it...I don't have anyone currently dealing with it.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?  I am curious about the wheat intolerance for anyone who has gone through it...is it typically just an intolerance or a true allergy?  If it is an intolerance is it the same as dairy/soy for averaging LO outgrowing around a year?

  • Loading the player....
  • @camedowncrushing For us it was just an intolerance, not an allergy. I cut out a lot of foods so it wasn't my highest priority to reintroduce, so I'm not sure exactly when he outgrew it, but he seems fine with it now (he's 22 mo).
When I'm on my PC later I will link a bunch ofmy favorite MSPI/wheat-free recipes. Eliminating wheat ontop of dairy an soy is hard. I ate (still eat) a lot of nuts and beans as well as other grains (quinoa, rice, barley). And avocado. Lots and lots of avocado.
  • Hello! I hope everyone is doing well! Sorry to hear your LO has a cold, @rocknrollfriend

    1. We are both doing really well. I haven't seen blood in his stool in a few weeks, and his stool is definitely more yellow/orangish than green, so I'm feeling really good about that! I will say that I'm not sure what we'll do for Superbowl Sunday, but I'm not looking forward to all the freakin' cheese that's sure to be around wherever we are.

    2. I don't know anyone IRL who is dealing with any form of MSPI right now. I've heard of people who dealt with it before, but I think they are mostly friends of friends, you know? No one that I'm really acquainted with. That makes it hard. When I had GD, another friend had it at the same time, so we could commiserate.

    3. When and how do you go about trying to re-introduce things? I know kids do outgrow this intolerance, and the only way I'd know is to re-introduce, but he's only 3 months, so I don't want to try it if this is generally too early to have outgrown it. I'm content to wait if it's likely to cause him pain. He's got his 4 month check-up in a few weeks, so I'm planning to ask the doctor about it then. But I figured I'd get your opinions here as well.

I've been finding that things I was expecting to be able to eat at restaurants have dairy in them. At Red Robin, the guacamole has dairy in it! Guacamole? That's like my go-to! Maybe they mix it with sour cream? I have no idea, and it's pre-made, so no one at the restaurant knew either haha!

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? DS is ok. I am still having pain from my recent UTI. I don't understand what nursing mothers do to get through the pain without pyridium.

    2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? Not currently. My nephew had mspi but outgrew it at 1 year old, he is now 3.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? DS still is doing ok with melted cheese. I can't believe it, I'm still in shock. I'm still being cautious, I worry about overloading his system too fast with dairy.

  • @ JarynA When to re-introduce things - DS' allergist had told us to try soy again at 9 months and wait until 1 year for dairy, but then when we got to a year he changed his mind and said 18 months. I think a lot if it depends on the individual - both how bad the reaction has been and how you feel you can deal with it. I didn't want to deal with how bad DS acted so I have been taking it really slow. However, I've seen people post that they try every few months.

  • Thanks @brideinsummer04! That's good information. I definitely don't want to cause him unnecessary pain!

  • @JarynA I'm so glad to hear your LO is doing well! I've heard some moms say they've reintroduced at 6 months with success. That just blows my mind, though, as we were still figuring out what the heck else was bothering him (turned out to be wheat) at 6 mo! Anyway, that is the earliest I would try, but your pedi might have some other advice at his 4 mo check up.
That's so annoying when random things have dairy in them! We went to a cajun/creole restaurant once to treat my parents, and literally everything had butter in it. Anything grilled/sauteed, the gumbo, the jumbalya... I think I ended up having a very plain salad, haha.
@brideinsummer04 Man, you have been dealing with that UTI for weeks now! I hope the pain goes away soon!

Thanks so much!  I really appreciate it.
  • @JarynA Do you have a Chipolte near you?  They have a great menu for allergies.

Also with DD1 I didn't attempt trying anything until 8 months, and i introduced directly to her so as not to taint my milk.  At 8 months soy was fine.  We tried baked in dairy (bread) at 8 months, and she was super fussy so I waited to try again at 10 months.  I did 5 days or so of giving her baked in dairy (bread, baked goods) and once that was fine we went to cooked cheese.  So she had ravioli and pizza ...things like that.  Once she was okay with that after a week then I went to yogurt and uncooked cheese.  Then we went to ice cream!  After I knew she was fine then I ate all the things I wanted!
  • Hi, this is my first time posting here, I'm so glad to have stumbled across this!

    1. DD will be 4 months next week and I have been dairy free since she was 8 weeks old. Her only real symptoms were green poop with mucous and rarely specks of blood. She has never been a fussy, gassy baby, but I cut out dairy and her poops returned to yellow in about a week. I didn't intentionally cut out soy, but since I rarely eat processed foods it was eliminated by default. I didn't really know if she had an intolerance to it too until this weekend. I ate some Trader Joe's cookie butter which contains soy flour and she began spitting up excessively and is pretty gassy, so we're recovering from that.

    2. Everyone I know IRL that has had a baby with MSPI switched to formula, so no real support there.

    3. Burning questions..what are your go-to high protein snacks? All of my favorites I've had to cut out (greek yogurt, string cheese, etc.). I've been relying on almonds and PB, but I think DD may have additional intolerances so was planning to cut nuts soon too. Her poops improved so much after I cut dairy, but have since fluctuated and I can't find any real diet trigger so I plan to try eliminating other potential allergens to see if it helps.

Other question, if mucous in the stool is the only symptom (she's a super happy baby, gaining weight well- 75% for wt, 95% for ht), is that a problem? I had read that if you continue to expose the baby to a food they have an intolerance to it can turn into a true allergy when they're older, so that's my main reason for trying to figure out if something else is bothering her.

  • @amichelle723 I eat a lot of beans. Snack-wise I make hummus or bean dip with chips/veggies. I also add good fats to my food whenever I can, like avocado and olive oil. It helps me feel full and gets more calories in. I've also found that without a good amount of carbs, I'm starving. So I've started making my own muffins at least once/week, and often make my own biscuits for dinner, and have found a couple of MSPI-friendly breads to buy for lunches/snacks.

DS was also a happy baby who grew well, though he was gassy, congested, and spit up a lot (and had green poops and occassional blood). Unless there's some other cause for mucous in the stool (like teething or a cold), I do think most pedis would be concerned, even if there were no other obvious symptoms. So if I were you, I would try to eliminate other foods and see if the mucous goes away.

Are you really 4 weeks pregnant? Congrats! With all these eliminations it might be useful for you to see a dietician to make sure you're getting all the calories/nutrition you need. Maybe your OB can refer you to one. GL!

  • Thanks @rocknrollfriend! I need to incorporate more beans into my diet for sure. My pedi says that if mucous is the only symptom, then she's ok, but I still have my worries. DD had a cold and has had a stuffy nose since the first of the year, so that definitely is making it difficult to tease out dietary causes for the mucous in the stool currently. Hoping it clears soon so I can get a better grasp on what foods may be causing her problems.

Lol, no I'm not pregnant. My ticker got stuck when I was 4 weeks with DD and I just never fixed it. Thanks for reminding me to remove it :)

Oh, I'm kind of relieved for you! 4 month old baby and 4 weeks pregnant would be overwhelming for me! :)
  • This is my first time posting. I've been on the elimination diet for two weeks with DD2 (she is four weeks old). I have been constantly researching MSPI for the past week and do glad I stumbled across this group. I don't know anyone in real life with MSPI and my family isn't supportive of the diet (they want me to switch to formula feeding). I'm trying to make this a positive experience and learn as much as possible in case DD2 has a lifelong milk and/or soy allergy.

My top questions are how do you transition? I've been pretty much starving because all I eat is meat with a salad then drink water for dinner. Not sure what to do for lunch and I eat fruit as a snack. This works while I'm on maternity leave but I'm afraid I will not be able to function when I return to my normal routine or be able to main style the lifestyle for a year!

Also, did any of your LO outgrow it and how do you make the decision to reintroduce dairy or soy?
  • @Kbrittonhart It sucks when people are not supportive.  With DD1 I got some comments, and it annoyed me.  DD1 had MSPI, and outgrew it at 10 months.  We saw an allergist prior to this who did a blood test to determine if it was an actual allergy or an intolerance, and told us it was an intolerance.  Most babies outgrow MSPI around the age of 1.  I introduced soy first, and then dairy...directly to her so as not to taint my milk.   I tried around 8 months, and she got super fussy so then I waited to 10 months.
Finding foods to eat is challenging int he beginning.  I had a hard time with DD1, and then after a few weeks found it easier.  This time around for DD2 I am also not eating wheat, and I am struggling.  I am eating the same few things, and it is frustrating.  I am hoping that as I get time to search on the internet I will stumble upon more good recipes and it will get easier.
    Good luck!
  • 1.  We are doing pretty well!  I'm on Day 12 of being dairy/soy free and my LO's mood has improved a lot.  He has definitely been less fussy the last 3 days, so I'm hoping that this means that the elimination is working for him.  We go to the pediatrician on Thursday, and will retest a dirty diaper to see if still positive for blood.
    2.  A woman I work with has a son with MSPI.  She sent me a list of foods/products that she eats, which was really helpful.  I can forward to anyone who wants it!
    3.  My question is about poop (when did this become my life??!) My little guy's poop has gotten more yellow but still has some green.  Is this normal for being off dairy almost 2 weeks?  Or should it be totally back to normal by now?

@kbrittonhart - it does get better, I promise!  If you have a Whole Foods near you, they have lots of dairy/soy free products.  For lunch I eat a lot of turkey sandwiches and salads (I made a good one with corn, black beans and avocado that I eat with tortilla chips - you definitely need more than lettuce!)  Snacks are definitely the hardest part - I've been eating a lot of crackers/veggies with hummus, bananas with peanut butter and trail mix (nuts, craisins, chocolate chips - pretty easy to find dairyfree ones, surprisingly!)

  • @mrsking218 would you still be willing to share? My email is jst.22@hotmail.com if you don't mind

  • Hi ! My little one is 11 weeks and we suspected he had MSPI when he was around 45 days. I have been on a special diet since then. I have never seen anything different on his poop but he had very bad reflux, spit up and vomits a lot! He was also very cranky. The doctor suspected that he was lactose intolarant since I am also lactose intolarant and told me to cut out soy, nuts, milk, pop, chocolate, coffee, pepper
Now that I am reaching 45 days on the diet I can see he is much better and over all a happier baby.
So, here are the answers for the questions:
    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? He is much better!!!! On the other hand I hate not being able to eat a lot of things!!! I already thought of giving up breastfeeding but I now have a 4 months goal.
I just wish it was easier. I live in Brazil and here we don't have soo many substitutes that aren't soy based.
I already cried a lot over it ( I know it sounds stupid) but I can see that my LO is much better.
I also worry that he won't outgrow it and have to deal with it all his life.

    2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI?
No one I know. When I tell people about it they comment that they never heard of such thing

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Do you all have to cut out nuts? It was my go to healthy snacks ... And I miss it soo much!!!!!
  • Hi, I'm new to this check-in. After a food-allergy blood panel last week, DS was found to be allergic to dairy, soy, wheat, corn, egg, peanut, and sesame seeds (all moderate to high). He has an appointment with the allergy and asthma specialist at the local children's hospital. In the meantime, we are both on the elimination diet.

    To answer your questions:

    1. How are you doing? I'm adjusting. At first I was in a panic, but now I'm finding more things I can eat and am cooking really healthy meals. How is your LO doing? The bright-red rash that was on his face + hives on his torso are gone. His eczema on his legs persist, but are not getting worse. He seems less hyperactive and calmer. I hope this helps with him sleeping better -- he's such a light sleeper.

    2. Do you know anyone else dealing with MSPI? Not personally. But I do have close family members with severe peanut and other food allergies. That experience has helped me with reading food labels and so on.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I'm just four days into this. No questions -- but I'm sure some will come.
