~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~
Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI?
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 1/20
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? DS has a cold, so his face is a little rashy. DH thinks the zyrtec isn't helping at all. I think it's helping a little. sigh. I am fine, just waiting to catch this cold.
2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? Nope! No one else has even heard of it.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today!
@mrsking218 I saw your reply in last week's thread - I hope your LO is starting to feel better! Some moms do experience ups and downs with the MSPI symptoms while they're in the first few weeks of cutting out dairy/soy. And, I think even I'd be a little cranky if I had to do nebulizer treatments. Hang in there!
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? DD's poops are returning to normal color. This makes me happy. I haven't seen any blood in her stool since Saturday. I am okay, but I am struggling with the wheat elimination. I remember when DD1 was diagnosed with MSPI I had a hard first week or so, and then it became much easier to find foods to eat. I am hoping the same will be true this time around. I have been eating eggs for breakfast, guacamole with tortilla chips every day for lunch, and some vegetable with plain chicken for dinner. I have also ate an entire bag of chocolate chips (dairy free brand) for snacks...I am just trying to keep my calories up so I don't lose my supply.
2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? I have a few friends who have dealt with it when my DD1 had it...I don't have anyone currently dealing with it.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I am curious about the wheat intolerance for anyone who has gone through it...is it typically just an intolerance or a true allergy? If it is an intolerance is it the same as dairy/soy for averaging LO outgrowing around a year?
When I'm on my PC later I will link a bunch ofmy favorite MSPI/wheat-free recipes. Eliminating wheat ontop of dairy an soy is hard. I ate (still eat) a lot of nuts and beans as well as other grains (quinoa, rice, barley). And avocado. Lots and lots of avocado.
2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI? Not currently. My nephew had mspi but outgrew it at 1 year old, he is now 3.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? DS still is doing ok with melted cheese. I can't believe it, I'm still in shock. I'm still being cautious, I worry about overloading his system too fast with dairy.
That's so annoying when random things have dairy in them! We went to a cajun/creole restaurant once to treat my parents, and literally everything had butter in it. Anything grilled/sauteed, the gumbo, the jumbalya... I think I ended up having a very plain salad, haha.
@brideinsummer04 Man, you have been dealing with that UTI for weeks now! I hope the pain goes away soon!

Dessert (I LOVE this recipe - I only use ~2Tbs maple syrup though because I don't have much of a sweet tooth. Mix the cocoa powder in with just a little bit of the almond milk to make a slurry before mixing the entire thing up): https://veganfling.blogspot.ie/2013/01/chocolate-chia-pudding.html
Also with DD1 I didn't attempt trying anything until 8 months, and i introduced directly to her so as not to taint my milk. At 8 months soy was fine. We tried baked in dairy (bread) at 8 months, and she was super fussy so I waited to try again at 10 months. I did 5 days or so of giving her baked in dairy (bread, baked goods) and once that was fine we went to cooked cheese. So she had ravioli and pizza ...things like that. Once she was okay with that after a week then I went to yogurt and uncooked cheese. Then we went to ice cream! After I knew she was fine then I ate all the things I wanted!
@amichelle723 I eat a lot of beans. Snack-wise I make hummus or bean dip with chips/veggies. I also add good fats to my food whenever I can, like avocado and olive oil. It helps me feel full and gets more calories in. I've also found that without a good amount of carbs, I'm starving. So I've started making my own muffins at least once/week, and often make my own biscuits for dinner, and have found a couple of MSPI-friendly breads to buy for lunches/snacks.
DS was also a happy baby who grew well, though he was gassy, congested, and spit up a lot (and had green poops and occassional blood). Unless there's some other cause for mucous in the stool (like teething or a cold), I do think most pedis would be concerned, even if there were no other obvious symptoms. So if I were you, I would try to eliminate other foods and see if the mucous goes away.
Are you really 4 weeks pregnant? Congrats! With all these eliminations it might be useful for you to see a dietician to make sure you're getting all the calories/nutrition you need. Maybe your OB can refer you to one. GL!
Oh, I'm kind of relieved for you! 4 month old baby and 4 weeks pregnant would be overwhelming for me!
My top questions are how do you transition? I've been pretty much starving because all I eat is meat with a salad then drink water for dinner. Not sure what to do for lunch and I eat fruit as a snack. This works while I'm on maternity leave but I'm afraid I will not be able to function when I return to my normal routine or be able to main style the lifestyle for a year!
Also, did any of your LO outgrow it and how do you make the decision to reintroduce dairy or soy?
Finding foods to eat is challenging int he beginning. I had a hard time with DD1, and then after a few weeks found it easier. This time around for DD2 I am also not eating wheat, and I am struggling. I am eating the same few things, and it is frustrating. I am hoping that as I get time to search on the internet I will stumble upon more good recipes and it will get easier.
Good luck!
2. A woman I work with has a son with MSPI. She sent me a list of foods/products that she eats, which was really helpful. I can forward to anyone who wants it!
3. My question is about poop (when did this become my life??!) My little guy's poop has gotten more yellow but still has some green. Is this normal for being off dairy almost 2 weeks? Or should it be totally back to normal by now?
@kbrittonhart - it does get better, I promise! If you have a Whole Foods near you, they have lots of dairy/soy free products. For lunch I eat a lot of turkey sandwiches and salads (I made a good one with corn, black beans and avocado that I eat with tortilla chips - you definitely need more than lettuce!) Snacks are definitely the hardest part - I've been eating a lot of crackers/veggies with hummus, bananas with peanut butter and trail mix (nuts, craisins, chocolate chips - pretty easy to find dairyfree ones, surprisingly!)
Now that I am reaching 45 days on the diet I can see he is much better and over all a happier baby.
So, here are the answers for the questions:
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? He is much better!!!! On the other hand I hate not being able to eat a lot of things!!! I already thought of giving up breastfeeding but I now have a 4 months goal.
I just wish it was easier. I live in Brazil and here we don't have soo many substitutes that aren't soy based.
I already cried a lot over it ( I know it sounds stupid) but I can see that my LO is much better.
I also worry that he won't outgrow it and have to deal with it all his life.
2. Do you know anyone else IRL dealing with MSPI?
No one I know. When I tell people about it they comment that they never heard of such thing
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Do you all have to cut out nuts? It was my go to healthy snacks ... And I miss it soo much!!!!!
To answer your questions:
1. How are you doing? I'm adjusting. At first I was in a panic, but now I'm finding more things I can eat and am cooking really healthy meals. How is your LO doing? The bright-red rash that was on his face + hives on his torso are gone. His eczema on his legs persist, but are not getting worse. He seems less hyperactive and calmer. I hope this helps with him sleeping better -- he's such a light sleeper.
2. Do you know anyone else dealing with MSPI? Not personally. But I do have close family members with severe peanut and other food allergies. That experience has helped me with reading food labels and so on.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I'm just four days into this. No questions -- but I'm sure some will come.
