~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~
Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
2. Now the most important recipes - what's for dessert this Thursday?
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check In~*~* 11/25
2. My MIL said she found a pumpkin pie recipe that us made with coconut milk. If it's good I'll post it next week.
3. Once the dairy cycles out of my system, if I accidentally eat some dairy, how long will it take for LO to react to it? How long can I expect the reaction to last?
As an aside, I am extremely thankful that I have friends and family who are so understanding and willing to make substitutions for me so that I can eat with everyone when we all get together.
2. None I'm not cooking this year so I don't really have a say
3. I have the same question as JarynA
Hi all, sorry I had to P&R yesterday and I don't have much time today either. I'll post again later tonight. I just wanted to say to @sabrinakurtz - I know it's so hard to make the diet changes! Especially this time of year, when there are so many gatherings centered around food, much of which you won't be able to eat. I suggest bringing one or two treats or other dishes that you know you can eat, so you hopefully won't feel quite so deprived. I try to bring something I really like rather than just something edible.
Regarding FF, I know that might seem like the easier option, but it isn't always. Some babies are intolerant of certain formulas, even the hypoallergenic ones (they are still based on dairy and/or soy, the proteins are just more broken down), and parents have to go through multiple formulas befor finding one that agrees with their LO. The diet is hard at first, but it really does get easier! Hang in there, and we're always here for support!
2. I'm thinking of making this pumpkin pie chia pudding: https://www.savorylotus.com/2013/10/04/pumpkin-pie-chia-pudding/
I've made it once before and it is GOOD! Especially for someone who hasn't had real pudding in awhile.
3. I just wanted to share with you all how easy it is to make your own almond milk. I just started doing this a few weeks ago and I wish I had started a long time ago! All you have to do is soak 1 c raw almonds for a day or two, drain and rinse, throw them in the blender with 4 c water, blitz and strain (original recipe recommends cheesecloth but a fine mesh strainer works fine for me). Add a pinch of salt, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and a Tbs or 2 of maple syrup - so good! Way cheaper than store bought and fewer additives. I love it! Also, it's great to use for the chia pudding.
@sabrinakurtz when I get frustrated and start thinking about formula, I remind myself how much it costs! Wow! I'm thankful for this check in so I know I'm not alone in this. It's hard!
ETA: I think some of what I have seen on the past 24 hrs is from his little bum which, despite my best efforts, seems to be a bit chapped. So good/bad news, I guess.
2. Now the most important recipes -what's for dessert this Thursday? I was going to bake an apple pie with Pillsbury crust since that is dairy and soy protein free but was too tired so DH picked up a vegan one from Whole Foods.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Wdy is a logical progression for reintroing soy.... Baked goods then soy yogurt then soy milk or something else first? Also was that a bad move for me to try the muffins? His allergist said only give it to him so I don't taint the milk.
Thanks and happy thanksgiving!
