Ferrous Sulfate (TMI rant)

I haven't pooped since Friday, and I feel miserable. I'd be happy to even have rabbit turds at this point. I've tried extra fluids, extra fruits and veggies, and Metamucil - still not a single BM. I've struggled with slow bowels for over a year as it is, and I've been treated at the hospital for impaction twice since last October. Our doctor has me taking these stupid supplements every day to keep my iron levels boosted, and she warned me that constipation can become an issue. No shit!! (See what I did there...?)

This is what I have to say: F--- you, iron pills...F--- YOU!!!!!!!!!

You may go about your business as usual now. Thanks for reading.

Re: Ferrous Sulfate (TMI rant)

  • I need to start taking iron now too- they suggested feosol because it has something to make it easier on the constipation.

Sorry if this is the equivant of suggesting ginger when you have horrid morning sickness & have tried everything.

If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, I will answer you:
I am here to live out loud!
  • My OB put me on ferrous sulfate as well and I had the same issues, in addition to it making me nauseous because I was still in first tri when I started.  So someone on here recommended getting a slow release tablet instead and that helped a lot.  I just bought the generic version at Walgreens.

When I was PG with my DS, my OB put me on a prescription iron capsule that gave me no GI issues whatsoever, so if the slow release doesn't help maybe ask for that.

  • I was on iron supps with DD -- definitely try the slow release tabs and maybe ask for a Rx stool softener?

  • Did she prescribe you a stool softener to take with your iron?
Unfortunately, she didn't. I took Colace during first trimester because of natural constipation, so I might try that next.

Are you iron levels low?  My doctor said even though I have low iron levels, that as long as I wasn't deficient I could skip the iron supplements since it caused such bad constipation.
@poru - My iron levels are too low. I've had trouble with anemia for years, and my prenatal vitamins are gummies, so they don't contain any iron, which doesn't help at all. For a while, I was craving red meat and was eating it 3 times a day, but now I can't tolerate it whatsoever and I'm not eating much of anything as it is, so the supplements have become necessary.  :(

  • aside from the stool softener, my midwife says to drink tons of water, which you should be doing anyway. More liquid might loosed things up
  • Try apples! They always get me going.

  • Ok let me just say that I know you said you tried fruit but Papaya seriously saved me. I ate a whole one out of desperation but it felt sooo good!
  • If you like/can stomach a little coffee (even one of Starbucks' tasty holiday lattes!), that ALWAYS works for me. Works a little more than I'd like to admit some days.

  • They sell "gentle" iron (ie, slow release to reduce constipation), if that's a possibility.

When I was backed up from the Zofran, I was taking psyllium husk capsules (it's the active ingredient in metamucil, but without any extras--just the fiber part).  I would also resort to green smoothies with tons of spinach.

Hope it gets better for you soon!

  • There are options for iron. Floridex is a good one, I think.

Nobody likes an enema, but it always gets the job done!

  • I've concluded I'll never poop again.
  • Have you tried prune juice?  Try starting out with a small glass, because, um, sometimes too much works too well.

Coconut water has also helped, and I know there is one brand (can't think of it now) that specifically says pasteurized on it and comes in a pack of four individual containers.

  • I actually like prune juice (don't tell anyone...  :D ), and coconut water has worked for me before, but I can't really stomach the taste unless it's chocolate coconut water, which for some reason is not available around here anymore... These are excellent suggestions - thank you!! I'm tempted to try cider, but that has a tendency to give me nasty cramps in addition to diarrhea. I've stopped taking the iron supplement now, so I've been able to "go", but I'm still struggling with gas because I was backed up for so long.
