Best Prenatal Vitamin

Just this morning I had three (for accuracy of course :) ) positive pregnancy tests!!! Anyone have recommendations for a good prenatal vitamin brand? Or anything else you would like to share as mom's to be that will be helpful for these first few weeks?

Here's the vitamin regimen I've been on for several years (started about a year before TTC my son who is now 13 months old, stayed on it for breastfeeding him, I plan to keep doing this until I'm done having kids and breastfeeding).

    New Chapter Perfect Prenatal
    - No dyes.
    - No unfermented soy.
    - No synthetic vitamins.
    - Vitamin A is 100% from beta-carotene.
    - Daily dose is split into 3 pills for better absorption and to be easier on the stomach.
    - Contains probiotics for easy digestion.
    - Not "horse-pill" sized, easy to swallow.

    I also take:

    Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA
    - Recommended by the American Pregnancy Association.
    - 450 mg of DHA
    - Comes from small fish (anchovies and sardines), which don't store mercury like large carnivorous fish do. And they are more sustainable.
    - Goes through molecular distillation to remove any heavy metals.
    - Not "horse-pill" sized, easy to swallow.

And Vitamin D! I use the drops, Carson DDrops or Vitacost, 4000 IU dosage.

Per an article from WebMD, women who took 4000 IU of Vitamin D were:
Half as likely to develop gestational diabetes.
Half as likely to develop pregnancy-related high blood pressure / pre-eclampsia.
Less likely to give birth prematurely.
Less likely for both mother and baby to have insufficient Vitamin D levels.

There has also been some speculation linking Vitamin D deficiency and autism. Though the cause of autism is still unknown, I find this an interesting theory. A few articles on the subject:
Autism and Vitamin D (Psychology Today)

And women who take Vitamin D during pregnancy have a 61% lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).  https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/11/121119163331.htm

Also, once you have baby and are breastfeeding, if you are taking ~5,000 IU of Vitamin D a day, that covers baby's requirements. (Else you should supplement baby with at least 400 IU a day.)

Love New Chapter Pre Natals. A friend told me about them last year since I switched I can tell a difference in myself.
I also take Nortic Berry DHA but not the prenatal ones. I like the regular ones only difference is the regular are strawberry flavor so no fishy after taste.

The are a little more expensive but I can tell a difference. My nails are amazing no more splitting and I feel better. I was on One A Day and them tried Symilac and neither did anything for me.

Prenatals are a personal preference. My Dr just told me to start them. Never told me what brand.

    See above @abbyful info. Awesome!!!

  • At my first doctor appointment, they gave me a 30 day sample of Enfamil's Expecta. They gave me the 2 pack kind which has the regular prenatal vitamin, and a fish oil (without the smell or taste) to help improve baby's eyes, ears, and brain. I'm liking it so far.

Before that, I was on Nature Made prenatals. Target has a HUGE bottle for a great price. I'd recommend either of them!

I had already been taking it, and mentioned it to my OB when I was pregnant with DS and he approved of it.

DS's pediatrician also approved it. In fact, he brought it up and told me to take 4,000-6,000 IU while breastfeeding, which I replied "already am!".

  • I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One. It's a food based prenatal, and the iron is non-constipating. I love it!
  • I take the vitafusion gummy prenatals and love them.
  • I take Vitamin Code Raw PreNatals.  Love them!

  • I take the vitafusion gummy prenatals and love them.

I take these too. They aren't rough on my stomach either. I take the VitaFusion Prenatal gummy, then the VitaFusion Prenatal gummy fiber+calcium. Love them so far.
  • Im with khjoyce21. I have tried a bunch of samples from my doc, but my favorite are still the Rainbow Light Prenatal One. They're super gentle on my stomach and I notice that I have less bloating when I take them (as opposed to others). Hth!
  • Naturemade PreNatals! So great! I take them at night before bed.
  • Thanks for shareing!
  • I take the same!  I have to get my vitamin levels checked regularly because I had gastric bypass surgery so it is harder for me to absorb my vitamins.  Finally, after taking these pills, all of my levels have been in range. :)   I also take a Vitamin D 5000 IUI pill and an iron pill, but again that is because of my gastric bypass surgery and my limit to absorb vitamins from food.

I take the Kroger brand prenatal gummy vitamins. They're the same as the Vitafusion. Way easier on my stomach than the horse pill I was taking before.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.
