Flu shot

I'm sure this has been discussed 1 MILLION times but I'm mobile and don't feel like searching sorry! How many of you have had or are getting flu shot while still pregnant. My doc told me to but I'm still very hesitant about injection a live virus into my pregnant body!

Re: Flu shot

  • I'm getting one. I'm getting the preservative free one from Walgreens. It's free with my insurance.

The injection is not a live virus. It is inactivated and cannot cause the flu. However, you will most likely get some aches, pain at the injection sight, a headache, and a possible fever. If you do want to get it while pregnant I would ask about getting a shot that does not contain Thermisol. My office offers that to all pregnant women.
Exactly, it is not a live virus. I got mine last week, no hesitation. In my mind, I am not only protecting myself and my child, I am protecting the people around me by taking steps to ensure that I avoid the flu as much as possible. Of course, they are not a fail safe, but something is better than nothing.

    Edited for grammar mistake.

  • I got mine about a week and a half ago...my OB highly recommended having it while still pregnant to try and pass on some of the antibodies.

Same here. Got it last week when they gave them out at work for free. Doc highly recommended as well. I've never had issues with a flu shot, and the fact that the baby will be here during flu season made me want to do it even more.

The only live virus flu vaccine is the Flumist, which while pregnant, you are not allowed to have (that is the nasal spray). The flu vaccine (the shot)is perfectly safe and highly recommended while you are pregnant since it passes on some immunity to the baby because the baby can not get the vaccine till they are 6 months old.

  • As PPs said, it's not a live virus.  Just don't use the nasal spray vaccine, it contains weakened live virus, though I doubt anyone would give it to you since you are pregnant.  You need to get a flu shot though.

  • I'll be getting the shot! I generally do not do flu shots, but the chance to pass immunity on to my baby while on the inside,  is worth it to get one! Even if it doesn't actually work! And the shot is not a live virus it's the nasal spray that is!

Same here. I was at my 34 week appointment and my OB gave it to me. I glad I got it but --wow my arms is killing me and I've had a headache since I got the stupid thing :(
  • I got mine yesterday and my arm still hurts. However I think my pain is more from the nurse than the shot because the injection site isn't what hurts.
  • I was waiting till work had them because if I got it too soon, then they'd make me do it again - and I'm not doing that.  Now they have it and I don't know if I'll make it another 2 1/2 weeks so I'm torn because if I'm not going to pass on the immunity anyway, I don't want to get it till after...oh the dilemma.

  • I got mine Monday and have had no ill effects. My ob recommended it because it may pass on some antibodies to baby. I'd get it regardless, but I had no hesitations about getting it while pregnant.

I checked the CDC's website and the single-pack injection doesn't contain Thermesol but the multipack does.  So,  when you go to get the injection, you may want to ask if it's a single-pack or multipack injection that they're using.

  • The injection is not a live virus.  The nasal spray is.  Okay, just saw this was already posted.

I am waiting until October to get mine because that's when I get it every year, and it seems to be very effective timing to get the shot (At least where I live)!  That is when DH gets his too.

  • I've never had the flu shot.  My doc highly recommends it; however I'm a believer of "continue doing what you've always done."  What I mean is if it ain't broke don't break it.. lol.  So I will not be taking the shot.  I talked it over with my husband first though and he told me to go with whatever I felt was right.  I will be getting the Tdap though.  I say go with your gut, if you think you should get it than do it, if not don't.  It's your decision.
  • Yes, getting mine next week at my normal OB visit

Not trying to be snarky, bc I agree--to each her own. But honestly, if you've ever had the flu, you'd get the shot. I had it 10 years ago and I will never forget how horrible it was.
  • I got mine a week ago when I got the tdap vaccine. No side effects at all.

  • I got one at my 36 week check with my OB. In her office. I had no side effects.

  • I just got my shot today. I wanted to get it while pregnant to pass on some protection to the baby. I'm nervous about having a newborn during flu season. DD was a baby and too young for a flu shot until half way through flu season the year that H1N1 was going around. I've been nervous about the flu ever since. DD is going to get the flu mist tomorrow.

  • Got mine yesterday. My arm is a little sore, but nothing as compared to the tdap. It wasn't a question for me, as a teacher I get it every year.

Getting the TDaP at my next OB appointment (September 30th); flu shot will follow at my appointment the week after.

Please, don't be afraid to get your shots.  It's really NBD and protects both you and your baby from becoming needlessly ill.

  • I'm getting mine on Tuesday at my 36w checkup. I normally get it at work when they do the free clinic but that isn't until mid-October.
DS will get his next month when I take the baby for his first checkup. He will get the shot not the mist.
