Meatloaf - Literally a wad of cooked, seasoned ground beef.

Clam Chowder - a clam soup.  Boston or Now England Clam Chowder is creamy, and is usually white in color and has clams and potatoes.

Buffalo Wings - spicy or barbequed chicken wings

What would you serve meat loaf with? Vegetables and mash?
  • yep or mac and chesse

Yes, or other standard side dishes (like noodles).   Some people serve it with a gravy.  I grew up eating it with ketchup.   We also eat it cold the next day - meatloaf sandwiches.
    That sounds delicious!

I was so born in the wrong country :((
  • @frankierokx, are you serious, you've never had mac and cheese?  Do they not even sell the boxed versions over there??

I'm in such a state of disbelief right now.
I've had mac made with a horrible Roux sauce once  :-&

Frankie I will send you NYC pizza. You haven't lived until you have had a real slice of NYC pizza.
I'm trying to convince DH that we should in the future sell the house, put the kids in a boarding school, buy a camper van and tour the USA for a few years.

That looks delicious! Thank You :)

Frankie, I need a list of all American foods you haven't tried. I'll type up some recipes and post a thread on here for you :)...It might take a week for me to do so lol. Have you had chicken and dumplings?
    You are just wonderful!

    Anything pumpkin related.

A good chili recipe, like the ones you put on hot dogs!!

I've always wanted a good recipe for your version of pancakes/waffles.

I'm trying to remember now but it's quite hard when your on the spot.

One other question, what is a pizza pie?
    YOU ARE BREAKING MY HEART.

You can't make squash pie, but you can roast butternut squash with a chicken and it's delicious.

Buffalo wings!  They were invented here: https://www.anchorbar.com/

    They look hot!
Depends where you get them -- lots of places use different "strength" sauces in terms of spice so you can ratchet it up as hot or as mild as you like.  But yeah, they're generally super tangy and that's why they get served with celery and blue cheese, to cool your mouth down!  They're traditionally cooked up crispy with a little butter and Frank's Red Hot, which is this:

Frank's RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Hot Sauce 23oz

Frank's has the best slogan in all of American advertising: "I put that sh*t on everything."

DH is on Amazon now looking for a few bottles, he loves hot sauce, and that slogan, that's the best one I've ever heard!
  • Who's got a good recipe for Southern Fried Chicken?
  • Look up Thomas Keller's recipe. It's delicious!
  • White bread sucks!

@cash my DH was just asking me last night to find a recipe and make him chicken and dumplings. We don't really have it here in the northeast so neither of us have had it before.

That's butternut squash different then pumpkin. My mom makes them roasted under the oven but I don't really care for them, I bought one once to make for DS and it was a total bitch to cut up. Now I know why the grocery store sells it peeled and cut into chunks.

  • The crunchy skin is my favorite part!!!
I second this, I leave it for last mmm!!
  • Ack, I can not eat the skin, that's why brining is so important. It's the only way the actual meat has any taste.
  • Also collards!!! Mmmm, not sure if they are available there though. :(

I just sent my sister a gallon of franks red hot sauce in Berlin!

I'm a weenie when it comes to pepper spicy.. I do however, love curry spicy
I'm just the same as you. I can not stand hot sauce but I can handle a curry  :-/

DH can have these all to himself.
  • Make sure you season up the flour for fried chicken . Also, if you soak the chicken overnight in hot sauce and buttermilk, it is AMAZING!! And instead of egg, you can use milk as the liquid you dip into. Also, double dip the chicken. Dip in flour. Dip in liquid. Dip in flour. Mmm'mmm'mm

Also...you must use lard to fry it in. If you use anything else, it just won't be the same. I can seriously tell the difference between chicken fried in lard and vegetable oil...or olive oil. If you want "traditional southern", lard must be involved. Somewhat gross but true. :)

  • What happens when hot wings and fried chicken gets together? Hot Chicken. BEST THING EVER.

  • And I think we just discovered why America has an obesity rate of 65%! Lol. I'm so hungry reading all these posts and I literally JUST ate dinner! Too bad we couldn't each bake or cook something and share amongst the group "George Jetson" style!

It seriously is delicious. I haven't ever made that actual recipe, but Hot Chicken is so good and famous in my part of the country. Google it and you'll find all sorts of info on it.

@KateMW I am desperate to get back to your (our) part of the country...especially after this discussion and the mention of hot chicken. Sigh. Also because there are only 3 more days until college football season.

Can't wait! Which side of our state rivalry do you fall on?

If you get back, go to Dram in MB Village and they have great hot chicken, served on top of a corn pone {corn bread variety for Frankie and non Southerners} with a side of ranch/blue cheese. So yummy!
