Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? DS is fine, I am sick with a sinus infection or something, ugh. I chickened out again on giving him cheese. Maybe this week.

    2. What are some of the foods or other substances you were surprised to find had dairy or soy in them? My chapstick had soy in it! My pre-natal vitamins possibly had soy-derived ingredients. And the Di-Vi-Sol vitamin D drops I was giving DS had dairy and/or soy-derived ingredients, I can't remember now for sure.

    3. Please share your current favorite MSPI-friendly breakfast recipe! We usually have oatmeal. Lately I've been making soaked steel cut oats: put 1 c oats, 1 Tbs barley, 1 Tbs lemon juice, and 2 c water in a pan and leave it sitting on your stove overnight. In the morning add another 1 c water and simmer for about 10 min. Yummy with maple syrup, or with applesauce mixed in if you're a toddler. :)

    4. Anything else you'd like to share today? I found out last week that DS has been getting wheat at DC (Life cereal, saltines). He always gets a little rash on his face during the week and I haven't been able to figure out why. I had DH ask them not to give him any wheat this week so I can see if he stays rash-free. DH stifled rolling his eyes, I think, but I don't care if he thinks I'm paranoid, I'm his mama and I'm usually right! We'll see how it goes.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
This is my first week trying this out, my LO seems to be spitting up less and his skin is getting clearer! I have still had trace amounts of milk/soy on accident, so I hope with complete elimination things get even better.

    2. What are some of the foods or other substances you were surprised to find had dairy or soy in them?

Prenatal vitamins! Anyone have a good brand recommendation?

BBQ Potato chips. I bought some at the grocery store and read that label and they were "clean". We had another bag of leftover BBQ chips so I started eating those and then read the label DOH! there was milk in them, crazy how brand to brand differs.

    3. Please share your current favorite MSPI-friendly breakfast recipe!

I've been eating oatmeal with honey and cinnamon. I also really like apple wedges dipped in peanutbutter and honey.

    4. Anything else you'd like to share today?

Hi Ladies! This is my first time contributing to this post as I'm new to the MSPI thing. I hope to learn a lot from you ladies and offer support this stuff seems a bit tricky!

Welcome! I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One.
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?  We tested out dairy last week, but she didn't pass.  I had started relaxing about what I could eat because I had a few accidents and she did fine.  Now I am trying to cut it out completely again.

    2. What are some of the foods or other substances you were surprised to find had dairy or soy in them?  All the boxed meals.

    3. Please share your current favorite MSPI-friendly breakfast recipe!  I like to make pancakes with rice milk.

  • Sorry I'm posting late...
    1. We are both fine.
    2. I was surprised that regular claritin has lactose in it. The reditabs are safe though. I went to California Pizza Kitchen yesterday and was surprised their toasted almonds contained egg whites. Also so many things have soy protein like Trader Joe's prepared grilled chicken and some peanut butters. I saw someone posted here that McDonald's fries have milk. When I checked their website about 16 months ago they didn't list milk. Did they change their recipe or was the website wrong back then?
    3. Oatmeal with almond milk - it's not really a recipe bc I'm not much of a cook. I just look for boxed oatmeals that are safe. Also toast with earth balance and fruit.

  • Btw going to California Pizza Kitchen was rough. DH wanted to go really bad and I thought I could find something since they have other food besides pizza. The only thing that worked for me was salad. They at least though had a very detailed packet/checklist about which foods contained which allergens.

  • ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We were doing great! But then we tried a challenge and she failed. Dang! Or it could be teething. If she chomps on my knuckles any harder she might chew it right off. 2. What are some of the foods or other substances you were surprised to find had dairy or soy in them? Fries and deli meats. Meat! Really?! 3. Please share your current favorite MSPI-friendly breakfast recipe! Thomas bagel with Jif peanut butter. 4. Anything else you'd like to share today? I have a love/hate relationship with my pump. (I EP.)
  • 1. How are you doing? Great!  Getting a little sad that we will be day weaning soon though.  (I work full time & I just need to be done pumping at a year.  We'll still nurse morning and night until LO is ready to be done though.) How is your LO doing?Great he's now had dairy in baked goods, a very small bit of cheese, and we're going to try yogurt next week.  So far so good!!

    2. What are some of the foods or other substances you were surprised to find had dairy or soy in them? BBQ chips got me too!  Also I was surprised at how little I could eat when eating out.

    3. Please share your current favorite MSPI-friendly breakfast recipe! I make pancakes with unsweetened almond milk during the weekend and freeze them for a quick breakfast in the morning. (1/2 cup white flour, 1/2 cup wheat flour, 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp. oatmeal, 1/3 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt.  Mix well.  In a separate bowl combine 1 1/3 cup almond milk, 1tbsp lemon juice, 1 egg, 2 tbsp. oil.  Add to dry ingredients.

Lactose is a sugar. You don't need to avoid lactose on a MSPI diet.

I think there could still be trace amounts of the milk protein in lactose, and some babies might be able to handle it while some might be more sensitive. Similar to soy oil/soy lecithin. When I accidentally took some Benadryl (has lactose) when DS was about 11 mo old, he reacted quite clearly to it. Then around 14 mo I took some medication with lactose in it for a couple of days, and didn't see a reaction.
  • When I first went dairy free I remember someone telling me or reading to avoid casein, whey, and lactose. Even if lactose is a sugar isn't it still a milk product? Or no? DS is very allergic or intolerant of milk so I've been avoiding all that to play it safe.
