Pregnant after a Loss

lunchmeat ?

I've been craving turkey sandwiches something fierce for months now. Coming from a 22 year vegetarian who has eaten more cheeseburgers in the past 20 weeks than her entire life!!

I thought I'd read you can heat up turkey deli meat to steaming and its ok. Did I imagine this? Can anyone weigh in?

Re: lunchmeat ?

  • Yep, heating it should kill any possible bacteria.(For what it's worth, my SIL's ob actually told her not to sweat the occasional deli meat even if it wasn't heated, but I don't really see the big deal with heating it up)

But most lunch meat also has nitrates in it, so you should probably not be eating it *all* the time.

  • True!  My nurse also told me if I wanted a sandwich from subway or someplace like that is would be safer than deli meat from a supermarket.  This is because they have food and temperature regulations and check the meat a lot so it is safer than meat just sitting in the cooler

  • I've eaten lunch meat throughout my pregnancy. My OB told me not to worry about it. If I eat t out, I do make sure it's heated up. But if I eat it at home, I don't bother with heating it up.

  • I've been packing away deli sandwiches for weeks without heating them. The pregnancy police haven't updated food rules to reflect current food safety (that is, that there hasn't been a listeria outbreak related to lunch meat since new packing and shipment regulations were instituted after the big outbreak ~10 years ago).

    Eat your sandwich, woman! :)

    *lurking*

Actually, not true. Here's a link to a recent recall as an example: https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2013/04/deli-meat-listeria-recall-expands-to-include-468000-pounds-of-product/#.Ue7wsRai3G4

I also remember a couple other recalls when I was pg last year that were lunch meat related. Just because there has not been a major outbreak of listeria illness from lunch meat in recent years does not mean that contaminated product is not out there.

Proper refrigeration, handling, or storage of lunch meat also does not make a difference. If something is contaminated with listeria it happens at the time of packaging before it hits the store or restaurant. Cold does not kill it. Heat does.

Because I know that this is a hot subject that tends to start arguments, I do want to say that if someone wants unheated lunch meat that is their choice. I just want people to be informed in that choice.

  • I was told to heat the lunch meat and it would be fine. The nurse even said that toasting a sub at Subway would do the trick. I have yet to have lunch meat but I really want Jimmy Johns, so I might just get a BLT instead of one with  all of the lunch meat.

  • I ate ham nearly everyday. I heated it up. But there were lots of days I got a cold sub from publix.

  • If you go to Subway, you can always ask them to bake the sandwich for you to ease your mind about getting deli meat :D

If my SO makes my sandwhich, it gets heated up. If I make it, I put it right on the sandwhich and enjoy.

  • I talked to my Dr. and she was fairly unconcerned with lunch meat, whether it was deli meat at home or from a restaurant. She urged me to be very logical (use my common sense) about what I eat, if it seems even remotely questionable, don't do it. She also reminded me that most listeria outbreaks in recent years have been in other foods, so I think that is something important to keep in mind as well.
