New diaper smell makes me nauseous

I was unpacking an amazing diaper cake/mountain that my colleagues made us to welcome our son. I told them we plan on CDing so instead of the typical 500 sposies, they gave me 300 and supplemented with small gifts.

Every single sposie was rolled and individually tied with ribbon. Needless to say it took me about 1.5 hours to cut the ribbons, unwrap and put away all the dipes. As I was working on this The smell totally made me nauseous and i got a wicked headache. Why do sposies stink? They don't even have excrement in them and I can't stand the smell. Anyone in this boat with me?

Someone at my shower laughed when I said we plan on CDing. Saying that it stinks to the high seas to use cloth. I've actually heard the opposite, that they smell less than sposies, but as a ftm I would love your opinions.

Since I like you ladies, I would rather hear it from you than from the cd board ladies as I feel like they will be biased towards CDs. Any one here try both and prefer one? Why the preference?

I'd take the smell of a new disposable over a used one any day though

I actually don't mind the smell of sposies, they just smell like "baby" to me. My CD's since they haven't been used yet don't have a smell at all, which is fine too.

The new diaper smell doesn't bug me but if I had to unroll 300 I could see where any scent would get irritating.

I used disposables with DS and cloth with my niece when I babysat her full time. All in all the cloth weren't smellier until they got to a certain point and kind of got a little funky smelling even clean. At that point my SIL would "strip" them - I'm not clear on the process since I just changed them and didn't do the diaper laundry. I found cloth to be a lot easier than I anticipated, but again I didn't have to wash them.

What brand were they? I used pampers swaddlers sensitive, then cruisers, then easy-ups. I never noticed a smell with any of them. The crappy thing about diaper cakes is that you can't exchange any of the diapers, and 300!?! yikes!

I hate that perfumy smell sposies have, and when they're peed in, it smells so bad to me. We used Pampers swaddlers with DS1 until his one size cloth fit, and I felt like he smelled bad all the time. I was so happy to switch to cloth! Poop stinks no matter what, and cloth doesn't stink as long as it's washed properly.

I totally agree with you. I HATE the smell of sposies. Can't wait for cloth to fit this little lady!

Some are pampers swaddlers and some are huggies. It just smells like strong baby powder perfume to cover up a chemical smell. Yuck. We will only use the sposies when we go out and maybe in the colostrum early days, because I've been told the poop is like black tar and it stains quite easily. Since its only a couple days of that, I don't think it will be too bad.
The meconium won't ruin your diapers.  I've actually read that ladies got more stains with regular BF poop than the meconium.

This was us too, the occasional times we have used Disposables, I hated it, although we only used pampers swaddlers when they where free in the NICU otherwise we used the biodegradable ones, which smelt less.

I have HE washer, with no issues with stink at all with our CDs (you just need less soap and more water, so if you do a full load of diapers with half the soap, they are clean and it is cheaper too ), this time I am CDing from the start, I just got my newborn diapers in the mail and I can't wait to start using them.

I love the smell of new diapers. I was just sniffing some that I got at my shower over the weekend that were rolled and formed like little babies with a washcloth wrapped around like a blanket and a sock on the head like a hat. So adorable and creative! I'm all pro cloth diapering but my husband's against it (my reason is that it's better for the environment, his reason is that it actually isn't but I think his main reason is he has never been exposed to cloth and he doesn't want poop in our washing machine.) Regardless of whether we use cloth, there WILL be poop in the washing machine at one point while parenting. My mom cloth diapered both me and my brother so I remember the steps and with today's fancy technology and new options, its easier than ever. I wish he'd come around but I have to pick my battles....

I'm so glad no one gave me a diaper cake for my shower years ago. I hate them for the work they cause for the mother to be.

What you're smelling are the chemicals. Cloth does stink, but hey, it's a diaper with human waste contained in it. Big Smile What does anyone expect?

I can't take the smell either, that is why CD'ing has been so appealing. Also; Diaper cakes suck!

New disposables don't smell bad to me, but I think used smell more than cloth. With cloth you flush the poop and while I know you're "supposed to" with disposables as well, it usually just goes in the garbage with the diaper. So unless you constantly take the trash out, it's just sitting there smelling up the house. With the wetbag we use for our CDs, hardly any smell gets out at all.

Also, unrolling 300 diapers does not sound like a fun time - smelly or not.
