Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? For his demanding work schedule, yeah I really do. He always wants to spend his day off together as a family.
DH is a restaurant manager. Works 50-60 hours/week.
Some days he goes 9-9 some days 3-midnight.
The family balance could be better...When I worked 9-5 it was hard, because our schedules never allowed for family time. Now that I am home, I see him a lot on the days he goes in late, and when he goes early I wait until 9 to eat dinner with him.
We make it work, but holidays and weekends suck big time.
Ooooh I've been wondering too but I posted something like this months and months ago when I first started posting, and I didn't want to again :P But after the thread yesterday I was really wondering!
DH is a generator mechanic. Basically he works on the back-up power systems on all sorts of big buildings - hospitals, schools, government buildings, manufacturing plants, etc. And smaller stuff occasionally, like peoples houses, boats.
He works anywhere between a standard 40 to 80 +. On average I will say about 50 or so but when we have bad storms or anything that causes widespread outages, he is working basically 24/7.
For the most part, I think we have a pretty good balance. There are days when he gets home really late, just before DSs bedtime, or after he's already asleep, so those days suck, but generally he's home for dinner and weekends.
DH is a training specialist. He designs training programs, some Internet and some face to face, and trains people using them. He is technically a govt contractor. He works 40 hours a week and actually gets DD up and dropped off at daycare during the school year. We have a great work life balance but it took a little bit of work to get there.
Dh works in a machine shop. Im not sure what the real job title would be lol. He builds things like pieces of airplanes, mechanical arms, and some other really werid stuff.
He works around 48-60 hours a week. Depends on what he wants to do.
Hes got good hours. He goes in really early and is home by at 5. on fridays hes home at 3. Hes got all holidays off, plus a half day the day before a holiday and sometimes the Friday after off, all of which he gets paid for. Around the holidays, like the week between Christmas and new years, they have the option to work but but need too. He wouldn't get paid for the week off but its not mandatory to come in, and often those are like 5 hour days. He gets a good amount of vacation, and can leave for for a couple hours if he needs too with no problem, like if i need to go somewhere with out DS. He also works 3 mins from home and comes home for lunch all the time if we are home. I think he work/family balance is good. Its his addiction to the gym that gets in the way
What does your DH do? He is an environmental, health and safety specialist for a large company that makes machines.
How many hours does he work in an average week? 4050, more now and then if he's working on a big project.
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? I do. He only occassionally works over 50 hours a week. He starts work at 6 am and is off by 3, stops at the gym on his way home and is here with us before dinner is ready.
He works 40ish hrs a week, but he pretty much can make his own hours
Yes he has a very good balance, he leaves around 7.30, comes home for lunch for about 90 min (when he isn't working OOT) and then usually is home around 5pm
He does non-destructive testing on pipes at a plant that produces pipes for pipelines. Between 40 and 50 hrs per week. He works 3s and 4s, so on 3 days, off 4 days, on 4 days, off 3 days - so he's at home a lot. Since he works the night shift though, it's hard on his to adjust his sleeping schedule to be up when he's off. Hopefully, he'll be able to switch back to day shift soon.
DH is a lead aerospace engineer. They outfit planes with defense and servalence equipment. They mainly work international and he oversees their large projects.
He can work anywhere from 40 to 80 hours a week. His hours are extremely flexible. As long as he gets the work done no one cares when he does it. He is about to travel to the Middle East for a month and that sucks, but this is the first time in his 8 years with company he has had to travel for more than a week.
Yes. He has never missed anything important and often takes over to give me a break.
Software engineer, probably about 40+ hours a week (he probably works after kids go to bed about 2ish nights a week). He also teaches a weekly Master's level course at night about half of the year. Generally,he's gone by 8 and home around 5 (except for those nights he teaches).
He works for a company that has terrific benefits and understands people want a good work/life balance. I'm under no illusions that the majority of working parents don't have the flexibility he does. I certainly don't with my job (teaching)!
He does Xray at a large orthopedic center, 1-2 days a week he run an injection clinic. He works 40-50 hours and has an hour long commute. Days he runs a clinic are longer -- today he left at 7am and will likely not be home until 7pm. He often gets home as we are finishing dinner and is rarely here for baths or playtime during the week but he does the girls' bedtime almost every night. He has no weekends or holidays either which is good for a medical profession. He also has a huge amount of earned time and boss is very good granting time off. My schedule (part time visiting nurse) is much more flexible with better hours, though I often bring work home and he never does.

I thought your H worked somewhere that made bullets? Haha, I was way off.
The company he works for is one of the largest ammunition makers in the country. So you were not wrong. He gets ammunition at cost when they have overages which us never lately. However that part of the company is in Mn or Florida he works for their aircraft division.
My DH is a foreman for a general construction company. He is basically a babysitter at most jobs. He has to be present for these jobs.
Hours can vary. Sometimes 30, sometimes 40 and sometimes 70. That is the nature of the construction business though, sometimes jobs can get shut down and sometimes they take forever to complete. Sometimes he has to do a job OOT and sometimes he has overnight jobs even though he already worked that day.
For the most part it is a good balance, although his schedule is unpredictable. He is also very exhausted by the time he comes home, but he manages to spend time with DD and 90% of the time he is home for dinner. The owner of the company is the one that is in the office 24/7.
What does your DH do? A software engineer in the cyber security field
How many hours does he work in an average week? Usually 50. 40 for his salary and then 10 hours he gets paid overtime.
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? Yes. He can't work from home because of the nature of the work, but he can flex his hours a little.
DH is a teacher. He works roughly 7a to 4p. Sometimes it's earlier or later depending on meetings. He is a union guy, so he's on a bunch of committees. He is out at least one evening with a meeting of some sort, but he is here for dinner most nights and gets to spend quality time with the kids.
Works in the total loss department for major car insurance company.
He works M-F 8:30-5pm.
Yes he does! He's home at a good time. And he's always able to take half days when needed, or attend special events. And he's home all weekend, and only travels 1-2 times a year.
He's a software engineer for a major tech company. He was working about 50, but this year has been rough and its more like 60-70 hours (yeah this has sucked). Work life balance? What is that? Kidding, but it has been tough with the new baby and never seeing him. I'll be glad when he finds a new job, not just for the hours, but the department is taking a new direction that he's not interested in.
he works 40 hours a week. We live four miles from the office so he's physically only gone 8.5 hours since he leaves 15 minutes early (or less if he drives, but he usually cycles to work).
Yes, he has a great work/life balance. He can do all his work from home so if I'm sick he runs into work for a half hour, gets the laptop and does what he needs to do at home. If we decide on a whim we want to go take a ride to an amusement park and stay overnight midweek to avoid the crowds(which we recently did) he goes to work on the weekend to make up the hours. We usually get paid out the bulk of his yearly sick/vacation days at the end of the year since he seldom uses them which ends up being a nice extra check in april for vacation money.
DH is a supervisor for a debt collection agency, he works about 40 to 45 hours a week. His job is flexible, so he has plenty of family time. There's really only one day out of the week that sucks; the one he has to work a late shift. But I'll gladly take it, since he gets 2.5 day weekends.

What does your DH do? He's an electrical engineer with the Department of National Defense (in Canada), working on naval ships/submarines
How many hours does he work in an average week? 45 hrs/wk. He's sometimes offered some overtime hours as well, which he always takes, but that only happens a few times a year.
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? Absolutely. That's one huge benefit of working for the government, for sure. Good benefits and pay, set hours, lots of flexibility, etc. He has actually switched to the afternoon shift for the summer, so he gets up at 8:00 am and is home until 3:30 pm. It's awesome!
Dh is an accountant for a small business.he works 40 hours a week. Does he get a lot of vacation? I can't imagine not using all the days, we usually run out and dh gets 23 days. Then again, you can't cash them in at the end either.
he gets 18 days worth.
He'll usually work extra hours leading up to and after. For example, last work week we were gone m-th on vacation. he worked fri, sat and sun from 6-6 which was 36 hours. He used four hours of vacation time for last week. The week prior we left Tuesday afternoon for vacation. He worked sun, mon and Tuesday 6-6 and used four hours of vacation time for that week. So we were gone 8 full days/most of a 9th day but used 8 hours of vacation time.
Its kind of a pita for dh to work 12 hour days before/after but it's worth it for the check we get every April.
DH works in the engineering dept. for a local company. He fixes broken
machines and runs the preventative maintenance computer programs. His boss told him within
the next few months he will be promoted to strictly office work.
He works 40 hours a week, occasionally more but it's very reasonable. He lives a little before 7 and is home by 4. He has all weekends off and major holidays as well. He balances family and work well.

The company I used to work for gave a great amount of vacation time, and I always had around 100 hours leftover to carry to the next year. My mom works for the same company and I just asked her, she currently has 275 but can only carry over 200. She's been there 15 years though so gets more than I ever did. What makes it hard is the schedule is so flexible that when she leaves work she easily makes it up later in the week/month so it doesn't count as vacation time.
That's how it was with my dad at the post office, he had the max hours and that was something like 6 months. I still feel like he took time off when we were kids, but I guess it adds up since he could roll them over indefinitely. I don't know how common that is anymore, though. Maybe government jobs?
government and unionized companies too. My dad works for a union and has an absurd amount of vacation time.
The one downside of my Dhs job is we can't roll the hours into the next year. He does get paid out for hours he doesn't use though which is pretty sweet.
What does your DH do? CEO and General Counsel of a mid-size medical device company
How many hours does he work in an average week? He probably works 50 hours a week at the office, but he takes phone calls and emails around the clock. He also does a lot of reading and research in the evenings after DD is asleep and sometimes before depending on what they're doing at the office at the time. He is also going through the process of hopefully {knock on wood!} selling majority ownership to a private equity group, so he is busier than usual. He travels a lot as well, but he's home for a month right now. When he's gone on trips, he works from 7am-past midnight with dinners, etc. so we don't talk. He calls DD in the afternoons to make sure he gets to talk to her, but he and I don't talk as much.
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? He's had better, but he's there when we need him. He's been great since I've been pregnant, he's always helpful in the evenings with DD when he's here, dotes on me when I'm not feeling well. Of course, he could be home more, but who couldn't? We make up for family time on the weekend and vacations.
My husband is a post doctoral researcher at a major University. We're hoping his next job will be as a tenure track professor (he goes on the market this fall).
He works 40-70 hours a week, 50-60 on a normal week, 40 is a very short week.
He has a great work-life balance. He doesn't punch a clock or anything, frequently works from home. He can take a weekday to do something fun or arrange to be home so I can go to appointments and stuff. He's never "off" and works evenings, weekends, any spare minute. But he is able to spend time with our kids pretty much daily.

For the most part, yes. He doesn't really have the type of job where he can go in late or leave early without planning ahead of time, but whenever we've had a family situation they've been incredibly generous with DH needing to have a flexible schedule. When I was on bed rest they gave him a fixed schedule so that we could arrange childcare for DS. They also scheduled him a non-essential shift so if there was any day that he needed to take off he didn't affect the operation.
In general, it's an amazing company to work for. They treat him well, he loves it and our benefits kick asss.

I'm so glad that you wrote this, bc that's what I've been trying to put into words on the other thread. He works all the time, answering calls, emails, reading, etc. but he's here for a lot of it. So he can always hang out with DD and us. As long as he's not out of the town, he can be wherever. Except during the deal, it's been harder.
How many hours does he work in an average week? 40
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance? Yes, very much so. It is one of the reasons I gave up my career and DH didn't. Every attorney I have ever worked for was a workaholic and had been divorced at least once. We picked the family friendliest option.
Now I curious.

Wow, holy overstatement batman...every atty you know is a workaholic and divorced? LOL KC, is that you?
He probably averages 50 hours a week, but it's not consistent.
He takes 10 weeks off a year, so we have a lot of family time. And he's typically home for dinner two or three nights out of five. His working hours aren't flexible, though. He can't just take off on the spur of the moment if something comes up.

I have mad love for anesthesiologists. I've had a lot of surgery and the anesthesiologist is always the nicest, most kind person in the room. I'm sure it's part of the job to help keep the patient calm, but I also think it must come naturally for most.

I said everyone that I have ever worked with, yes. It is not the career per se, but the type of person that is drawn to the profession. It is easy to get sucked into work and not be able to balance work and home. I was a workaholic when I worked and I saw how easy it was to fall into that trap.

Well, it helps that they only have to be nice for the five minutes before they make you unconscious. But yes, they can be a chatty group, and most of them don't have the god-complex you see in some of the surgeons.

It's awesome!
he gets 18 days worth.
He fixes broken machines and runs the preventative maintenance computer programs. His boss told him within the next few months he will be promoted to strictly office work.
He works 40 hours a week, occasionally more but it's very reasonable. He lives a little before 7 and is home by 4. He has all weekends off and major holidays as well. He balances family and work well.
government and unionized companies too.
I ALMOST wrote "besides Mr. Hav." LOL
What does your DH do?
He works for a theme park
How many hours does he work in an average week?
40-60
Do you feel like he has a good family work balance?
Wow, holy overstatement batman...every atty you know is a workaholic and divorced? LOL KC, is that you?
He's an anesthesiologist.
Ha, true! But often they come to visit before you even make it to the OR to explain it all as well. Puts me at ease
I noticed this too during my csection.
