How long will the pain last?

FTM here and this is my first post on this board.  I'm sorry if this gets asked all of the time...but I am wondering how long the nipple pain will last?  DD is 2 weeks old and I get terrible pain as soon as she latches...it goes away after about 5-10 seconds.  But my nipples are also sore in general...like if something brushes them, it hurts BAD!

I am just wondering how long I can expect this to last?  Any help is appreciated!

FTM too! I had cracked, bleeding nips for about 2-3 weeks, the pain was gone by six weeks. It still feels weird and sometimes hurts but not like it used to. I'm used to it and my nips are supple and normal now. DD is 4 months now. I used pure lanolin to heal.

It really depends on the baby from what I've been told but most people I know say that for sure by 6 weeks it was a lot easier. My baby was latching better by about 3 weeks and then I had to EP due to an infection. We did that for 4+ weeks but she latched like a champ when we started EBFing again at 7 weeks.

Lanolin did nothing for me, apply a few drops of your own breast milk to your nipples, that may help with the healing.

FTM my baby is now over 4 months. My nips hurt so bad I cried, 2 weeks on one side and 3 weeks on the other, and then there was absolutely no pain. I was like you, it hurt and stung like hell for the first few seconds. Hang in there, use lanolin like crazy, and make sure to find good moral support! Good luck the pain was SO worth it in the long run!

The pain gradually reduced for me after 3 weeks. Ditto on nipple cream and letting your nipples breath with fresh air. I remember looking at the clock and crying because I knew my son would be feeding soon. Stick with it... I'm so glad I did. I fed my son for 19 months. Once the pain subsides you will bond with your LO like no one else will.

If you can be seen by LC that would be awesome! I thought I just had sissy nips, turns out I had thrush and didn't know... Since pain is only for the beginning, you probably don't have a latch issue, but LC might give you a few pointers!!

Thanks for the tips everyone!  I will try the lanolin cream and keep going.  I am glad to hear it sounds like I'm in the home stretch and it is going to get much easier.  It is definitely worth the pain, but I am glad it will end soon.  Thanks again for all of the helpful responses!

Took about 3.5 weeks for me.  I had her latch checked about 10 times to make sure I couldn't do anything else to help with the pain.
