Trouble TTC

Out of pocket

Is anyone out there out of pocket on all treatments and monitoring ? We have personally maxed out two credit cards, drained our savings, and taken out a hefty personal loan. If this cycle doesn't work out then I don't know what we are going to do. Any advice? Is there such thing as infertility financial aid?

Re: Out of pocket

  • Im sorry to hear about your financial and fertility struggles. I wish I had an answer for you. Ill keep you and DH in my prayers and my FX that yall get a BFP this month!
  • We were oop for the first four cycles...only recently got coverage that is small. For us to afford treatment we spread it out over two years and used mainly HSA account maxed. For IVF we may have to take a loan from 401k to help pay for a few thousand of it.

  • We paid out of pocket from various sources and our well has run dry. I am hoping for a bfp this cycle in the two week wait but just in case I googled "Ivf payment plans" and actually found some hope that if we move forward with that it could be affordable.
    Iui #1 = unmedicated = bfn. Iui # 2 = clomid 50 mg = bfn. Iui # 3 = clomid 50 mg = bfn. Iui # 4 = unmedicated = bfn. Iui # 5 = unmedicated = bfp - miscarriage at 5 wks. Iui #6 = nov 2012 = gonal f 75, endotrim 100= chemical pregnancy/bfn
  • There are programs like attain that offer package deals for ivf to help decrease the cost.

    PAIF/SAIF welcome!
  • There are medical loans, but the interest rates are usually sky high.  If you qualify, there are some grants for IVF.  I looked into the grants, but DH and I didn't qualify.  We were lucky enough to be able to afford to pay for IUIs as we went and paid for our IVF out of savings.  We are refinancing our house and pulling out equity to replenish our savings.

Being OOP is hard and that is why some couples have months off in between treatment cycles.  GL.

So sorry to hear about that.  We are OOP too for everything.  We have savings, but I know DH won't want to pull out too much.  We will be able to cover the cost of our IUIs, but if it came to IVF we would just have to put treatments on hold to save up some money.  Good luck & hopefully things will work out for you soon!

  • We're OOP and reaching the end of treatments. IVF isn't an option because of cost vs success rate so we will likely take a long break to save for adoption.

  • Our IUIs are covered, but have a high copay.  If we need IVF that would be completely OOP, so we are deciding that if it gets to that we will skip IVF and save for adoption.  I am afraid to spend all that money on IVF and still have no baby.  You should speak to your Dr office and see if they know of any options.  Our fertility center in NC has an assistance option for IVF.

    Good Luck!

  • We will be out of pocket too. DH and I sat down and discussed finances to decide what our limits were and what money we weren't willing to touch for treatments. That might mean we take breaks between treatments to save. If we got to the point of IVF or adoption, we plan to ask our parents for help.

I think someone, GermanGirl maybe, posted about getting into an IVF clinical trial. That might be an option. Good luck!

  • Being 100% OOP is hard. I am on 3rd cycle and saving is hard. The thing that kills me is the medication. I tried to apply for the compassionate care program and did not qualify. I have no understanding of how they pick who qualifies. I get the feel that not a lot of people do. I have read on here a bunch of different ranges, from 50,000- 100,000 and they have been denied. If you must, take breaks to save up.

GL and FX'd. I wish you Loads of Baby Dust.
