allergies (milk protein)

Hi, for those who have LO's that have a milk protein allergy or any other allergy did you see a specialist or only your ped?

Re: allergies (milk protein)

  • My ds is 4mo and the ped said that the allergy testing is not accurate enough at this age for him to recommend testing ds yet.  Ped said based on ds's reactions I should treat ds as milk allergic until he is older and can be accurately tested.

  • At this point it's treated as an "inolerance"  not an allergy.  You just have to work through it.

I agree with PP it is just an intolerance at this point and should remain that way until it is outgrown (big difference between intolerance and allergy, thankfully).

We just see a regular family doctor for baby care (he is great).  He did refer us to a pediatrician that is well versed in milk intolerance (and for her reflux) to make sure he wasn't missing anything.

But frankly, the special pediatrician had nothing more to add than the family doctor so really there wasn't a big need for a second look.  As others have said there really isn't too much to do at this point other than to wait it out (and cut dairy out of your diet.

  • We just see the regular pediatrician. He didn't even have much to say about it, I identified the intolerance and cut dairy out of my diet on my own about a month before her 4 mo well baby appt. I mentioned what I was doing and he said to keep with it. DD doesn't seem to be too severe, I can have baked good sometimes and it doesn't seem to bother her. I think it depends on the severity. If you're having blood in the stool and baby is not thriving, or has severe reflux associated with it, I might see a specialist. We didn't have any of those symptoms, just mucousy stools and eczema.

This is what we were told as well.  LO was diagnosed with MSPI at 4 weeks.  Most of the time an intolerance resolves itself so we will introduce dairy in the next couple of weeks.  If LO still has an issue we our pedi recommended an allergist.
