Anyone else trying to introduce a bottle this late?

So far I've been able to nurse DD before I run into work, do what I need to do there, and then come back home and finish working from there (I work from home and go into the office occasionally).  DD attempted to have a bottle once at church when she was really little, but it was a disaster, so I never tried again.  I've honestly been enjoying not having to pump at all.

But things are picking up at work and I'm needing to stay there longer.  DD is getting fussy for the sitter, who wants to start trying bottles to calm her down.  I'm supposed to try a bottle today and tomorrow to see how it goes, but I'm feeling lazy and REALLY not wanting to get out the dreaded pump.

Did anyone else have luck introducing a bottle to a BFing baby this late in the game?  I've had all of my other babies taking bottles of milk by a month old and have never had to deal with this before.

  • We only gave one at two weeks old to help with jaundice and not since.  I keep meaning to because I might want to leave the house eventually without him! I worked with DS1, so he took a bottle.  I think it may be too late for us... I think if I start anything at this point, it will just be a soft spouted sippy.

  • It may be hard. Andrew took a bottle without a problem starting at 4 weeks. He had one once every week or so from then on. Until a week and a half ago when he suddenly refused a bottle and hasn't taken one since. Not sure what changed but he will no longer take a bottle at all.

  • Not sure if this will help, since my experience was a little different...

We introduced a bottle pretty early, 4 weeks or so. However, now that he's 4.5 months and can go longer between feedings, he really only takes the bottle if he's SUPER hungry, otherwise he'll refuse and just wait for me. So, it may be that you leave a bottle, she doesn't take it, but then nurses a lot when you get back.

  • You guys are genius.  I have no idea why it never occurred to me to just go straight to a sippy.  I think I'll try it tonight.

  • Let us know how it goes! I'm curious.
  • not this late but I first tried around 3 months.  I had to try different kinds of bottles.  The old school Playtex nurser worked.

Please let us know how the sippy cup goes! My DS refuses the bottle and I'm thinking of trying a sippy cup next! I'm not a fan of pumping either, but it would be nice to go out with friends or to visit my horse without rushing home to nurse!

  • I wish I had known to introduce a bottle sooner. I had given DD one or two when she was around 3 months, but I could only get her to take it if I quickly switched her off of my breast. Now I'm back at work and she absolutely refuses. I found a sippy cup with a straw at target that said 4+ months on it, so I'm going to try that. I have hope because a week or so ago my fiance was drinking a jamba juice and holding DD, and she leaned over, sucked on the straw and almost drank some of the smoothie!
