My baby's first food was cat hair and lint (poll/discussion)

j/k, but it feels that way sometimes.

I'm really wanting to start a discussion on how we are all introducing solids instead of when, as per suggestion below.

So,

1. What is going to be/was your baby's first food?

2. Why/how did you choose what to feed baby first?

3. BLW, homemade, store bought, S.S.?

4. Any other thoughts on how you are feeding baby that you would like to share with the group? Any interesting experiences since starting to feed baby?

I am really interested in what all you ladies are up to on this so please include all your kids' experiences, STMs, we need a good cross section of baby feeding going on here! Of course FTM, like me, who haven't started yet will have less to contribute but go ahead anyway, our thoughts are important too even if we haven't had experience just yet!

Re: My baby's first food was cat hair and lint (poll/discussion)

  • 1. I'm not really sure. I want DD to have something nutrient dense for her first food, even if it is just for practice, but I also want her to help decide what she wants to try. Part of the reason I started this thread was to brainstorm a little.

    2. I believe that food before 1yr is just for practice, but I want to introduce her to foods that will be good for her when it does become more about nutrition.

    3. BLW, no homemade purees but homemade foods for sure!

    4. I eat around DD all the time and she is getting very curious about what I am doing and wants to grab what I have and see what it is. I figure that when she hits the other cues (pincher grip, sitting up unassisted, losing the suck reflex, etc.) that I will just let her finally have what it is that I am eating (as long as it is age appropriate) and to start solids that way.

  • Fun idea!

We started solids shortly after 4 months as recommended by the ped. DS is FF and was downing 38-40 ounces of formula a day and was (and still is) an extremely active little fellow. I was planning on waiting longer but I figured we would try it and if he hated it I would hold off. Well - he loves eating so we are solid feeding still!

    1. I did start with rice cereal, and then moved onto oatmeal.

    2. I chose this because the ped. recommended it and I really like/trust her.

    3. Yesterday was our first vegetable and I made my own sweet potato puree! I was surprised at how easy it was and surprised at how much DS liked it!

    4. Both DS and I seem to be having a blast with food. I look at solids for fun right now but that is just what we're having! I love food and cooking so I think I really will get into making my own. DS loves the whole experience, the high chair, the spoon, the different tastes and textures. To be honest, I'm glad we started them!

And just to get attention, here are some cute pics of yesterday's sweet potato adventure!

  • We did oatmeal consistently at 4 months. A week or so later we started with avocado. I decided to do this because they're so yummy and beyond healthy. We have now tried 7 foods and are up to two meals a day. Oatmeal mixed with fruit at lunch and a vegetable for dinner. Our pedi wants him at two meals a day by his next appt which is in a month. I really trust her opinion and we knew that our son was ready for food. He was starting to cry when we ate in front of him! I have two more vegetables I want to try and three more fruits. After that I'll then start mixing it up and doing more than one flavor at each meal. He hasn't hated any of them and screams because we don't feed him fast enough. Oh and I make everything myself. I either use farmers market produce, produce from the grocery store no organic that's just so expensive at th store, or frozen. Mostly for the peas and green beans!!
  • My DD eats a good serving of cat fur at least once a day!

We started "tasting" at around 4.5 months after the pedi recommended starting. I don't think she's quite ready for "meals" yet so we really just give her about a tablespoon or two maybe 2-3 times a week.

I like the concept of BLW so I'm pushing for that once I think she's capable. We got her a little self-feeding type thing (think a binky on a stick) that she can use to put purees in her mouth but I know BLW is really no purees so I'm just sort of doing my own thing.

This week we're trying peas and apples. She's had sweet potato, pears and bananas too. We tried rice cereal and oatmeal and I chose to move away from both.

  • Now that DD can roll back to belly, she is rolling halfway off her playmat onto the area rug in our living room and gets dog/cat hair in her hands. It's gross. I think I'm going to have to start putting another bigger blanket down under her playmat, because it's impossible to get rid of ALL the pet hair in this house.

    Anyway...

    1. Either rice or oatmeal cereal.

    2.  I have several boxes of it that were given to me and I don't want it to go to waste. As it is, half of it will probably be donated because I don't think we'll use all of it.

    3. Possibly a mixture of homemade and store bought... I don't see myself making all of her food myself, but I'll probably give it a try because I'm really cheap.

    4. My thoughts are I have no idea how to go about this. I know I want to try something within the next couple weeks (she'll be 6 months old at the end of this month). But I don't know how to do it. Do I start off with solids for just one feeding during the day? Do I try them before or after I nurse her? How quickly should we move from once a day to twice a day? I'm lost :-/

    4. I love how easy BFing is and I'm honestly not excited about figuring out what he's going to eat every day. I am excited for him to get to this milestone but I wish it would always be as tidy and easy as BFing. I feel totally selfish admitting this.

I TOTALLY agree with this. I'm actually not really looking forward to doing solids. It just seems like a lot more work than what I want to do. And I also feel really selfish about it.

    1. What is going to be/was your baby's first food? Oatmeal so I can mix it with other purees to thicken them.  DS1 was allergic, so I want to test it first.

    2. Why/how did you choose what to feed baby first?  Oh, see above^

    3. BLW, homemade, store bought, S.S.? Homemade for sure.  Will do a mix of purees and chunks

    4. Any other thoughts on how you are feeding baby that you would like to share with the group? Any interesting experiences since starting to feed baby?  It seems like a big deal, but will be anti-climatic until they are allergic to something. :)  I was really excited to start "real food" with DS1, but with DS2 I know it's just more dishes...  ;)

  • 1. We started with avacado when DS was a little older than 4 months with my pedi's OK. He liked it, but seemed gassy so we took a a break for a few weeks and since have done avacados, sweet potatoes, and peas once or twice a week.

    2. I knew I wanted to skip cereals, and wanted to go with foods that had legitimate nutritional value.

    3. I make my own purees. It's just so much cheaper and you get so much more for your money. So long as it stays as easy and cheap as it is, I'll stay away from canned foods. It weirds me out that some of the expiration dates on the jars are over a year. That doesn't seem like food he should be eating...

    4. We just went for it one day after we got the clear from the pedi. He had a couple bites, didn't push any of it out, and opened his mouth to let more in. We did the recommended wait for introducing new foods one at a time, and have stuck to the foods that are considered the most safe for first foods.  It's not something I'm heavy into right now. Like I said, he gets one or two tblsps. once or twice a week. I may try banana soon, or squash. I am trying to prolong the sweeter fruits for as long as possible to get him into the blander vegetables first.

  • 1 - Probably a vegetable.  Not pureed, just steamed and softened.  That's what I did with my last two.

2 - I usually choose a veggie that is either in season at the time (we try to eat local and in season) and/or that is easily digestible.

3 - Whatever we are eating for dinner as a family, just softened or cut so the baby can eat it.  Kind of like BLW, but I wait until my baby is older.

As I've said in other posts, my last two didn't start solids until closer to a year (between 10-11 months).  I introduce slowly - one new food at a time due to a family history of food allergies.  I guess technically, there is more than one ingredient sometimes.  I find that soups work well for babies.  I make large batches of soup for my family and then pick out the softened veggies from it for the baby, so I guess they may be getting a veggie that has been cooked in chicken or beef broth.  That works well for my babies.

  • 1. What is going to be/was your baby's first food?

Was going to be avacado or sweet potato, but my 94 year old grandfather stayed with us for a month, and one night during dinner he plopped a spoonful of butternut squash on Colton's tray. I just rolled with it, and Colton mostly played until he realized his fingers tasted delicious after playing in the mess on his tray. Since then he's tasted nectarines, banana, avocado, sweet potato, cucumber, greek yogurt, and applesauce. Judging by his diapers, not much is making it into his mouth, which is okay with me!

    2. Why/how did you choose what to feed baby first?

Originally I was going avocado/sweet potato because they're staples of MY diet, so they're always on hand.

    3. BLW, homemade, store bought, S.S.?

I've gotten  increasingly frustrated with the term "BLW" because of the FB group, I shouldn't let it irk me, but it does, so I'm just not using the term even though that's essentially what I'm doing. When people ask what he eats I'm kind of a smart @ss. I tend to say "food" and follow what kind of food with "edible food." I did have an older woman in the grocery store the other day talking to me about it (I was talking to Colton in the produce section about all the things he might like to eat) and she told me I should just say I'm doing it the OLD old fashioned way, lol, that's a little less snarky, so I may go with that.

    4. Any other thoughts on how you are feeding baby that you would like to share with the group? Any interesting experiences since starting to feed baby?

We're just rolling with everything. I thought I'd be a lot more rigid with delaying, but someone worded it perfectly in another post "They don't come with a calendar". Truthfully, at this point, he doesn't really eat much, he plays, and I'm not regretting letting him play sooner than 6 months I DID think, however, that I'd have given up EBFing by now, but we're still going strong and I love it......well I love it when he doesn't use his new tooth to bite and pull. :)

  • 1. My DD's first food was sweet potatoes, and she still loves them.  DS hasn't really had any "food," but we give him finger tastes of food.  The first taste he had was ice cream and now he thinks he gets some every time we have ice cream!

    2.  We chose to do veggies first because they really aren't sweet.  We'll do that again with DS.  DD loves veggies but really doesn't like fruit of any kind.  Weird kid...

     3.  With DD just about everything was homemade.  We only bought food when we were traveling.  We'll do the same thing with DS

    4.  Any thoughts? If you give your baby a paper plate, and she starts to eat it... take pictures! lol Smile

  • Oh, we gave him a taste of lemon at my brother's wedding (They had lemon slices on water glasses) and he sucked and sucked and sucked, made a face, then sucked some more.  Silly boy!

  • 1. What is going to be/was your baby's first food? Avocado was Caleb's first food. I started him at 4.5 months. He was VERY interested in our food and he's also FF and was drinking way more than the Dr said he was supposed to. And, let's face it, formula is CRAZY expensive so the more food he gets and less formula he drinks, the better.

    2. Why/how did you choose what to feed baby first? See above.

    3. BLW, homemade, store bought, S.S.? Homemade 100%. I'm a SAHM and I have the time. Although, honestly anyone could do it. I just cook whatever needs to be cooked in my crock pot with a little water and then puree it in my food processor. Works like a charm! I plan on making all his food and keeping a few jars on hand for emergencies (like if the power would go out).

    4. Any other thoughts on how you are feeding baby that you would like to share with the group? Any interesting experiences since starting to feed baby? It took him about 2 weeks before he started understanding the eating process. I would let him "play" with the spoon when he was finished while I cleaned up. I believe that helped him grasp the idea of opening his mouth as the spoon is coming. He eats like a champ now!
