If you've experienced sleep regression

How did you handle these new middle of the night wake ups? We are going on 3 weeks and its not getting any better. I've tried rubbing his back, giving him the paci, if that doesn't
Work I pick him up and rock him which sometimes keeps him up longer ! I don't think he's hungry and my pedi said don't get in the habit of going back to middle of the night feedings. I'm at a loss. Should I let him cry and try to
Put himself back to sleep?

I would disagree with your pedi, but that's just me. When DS went through his sleep regression we would bring him into our bed, offer a feeding and that usually helped. If he wasn't hungry, we'd simply cuddle until he fell asleep again. Don't engage him a lot because that won't help, but I found that with DS, if we had him close, he fell asleep again quickly. We bedshare from time to time as well, so if we both fell asleep, so be it.

  • I would disagree with your pedi too.  Have you seen this?

I've read that but DS is not breast fed I stopped at 10 weeks for medical reasons so I'm not sure it applies?! I guess I could try feeding tonight
  • When my FF baby went through the regression, I fed him. Sometimes he drank 4 oz. and went back to bed, other times one or two did the trick. It worked, so we stuck with it. FWIW, he's back to one feeding a night pretty consistently, so I don't think offering him food during that time set up any habits of expecting to eat more at night again.

Same here. DS would take a full 8 oz bottle but at some point in the day he would just go a really long time between feedings. It was a little wonky but once he got through the regression all of his feedings went back to being in the day with the first one around 5-5:30 am.

DS is in the middle of it right now and we do this, exactly.

  • I nurse my DD almost everytime she wakes up. It is faster than anything else for us and its not like she will be doing that at 16 :)

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • My son is hopefully at the tail end of a looooong sleep regression. I have found that he really is hungry. Nothing else consoles him. The regression started around the time he got more active, and he is SUPER active, moving all the time. I think he is burning more calories and too busy to eat enough during the day, so he makes up for it at night. He is FF too.

  • We're on I think week 6? Week 7? I stopped counting a while ago. It has gotten *slightly* better. We first tried her pacifier, if that didn't work then we offered a bottle (we're FF). Sometimes she was hungry, sometimes she didn't want to eat, just fussed and was awake.

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • I'm with the others here: DD was waking up to EAT because she was hungry- not because she was trying to difficult or thought it was fun as my pedi attempted to imply (bad pedi!!)

I bring her into bed and nurse her until she falls asleep. I'm not ready to sleep train and she's not able to get herself back to sleep on her own without crying quite a bit. It was the only way to bear the regression with any semblance of normalcy.

kelly321: how's it going, btw?! I know you've been really going through it!
