Started them at 4 months.. Tried oatmeal cereal.. She hated it.. I made avocado pure and she kind of likes that..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • 1. Definitely after 6 months, probably closer to 8-9 months

    2. Whatever she seems interested in and is appropriate, probably a fruit or veg, maybe a squash?

We are really wanting to do BLW so we will be playing it by ear and just using common sense.

  • I am waiting as long as possible. Dd wants to feed her brother so bad and has tried. I feel like me feeding him will just make my life more difficult. Lol.

Anyways, I am waiting until 6 months or longer. He wants food though, so probably the day he turns 6 months. I have given him apple juice for constipation, so I will probably started with a cereal and applesauce.
  • 1. 6 months or later. He's sensitive to dairy and soy, and was a c/s baby, so I'm considering holding off longer than the usual. Plus he's my baby. Wink

    2. Probably avocado, followed by various other veggies and fruits. Going to try to stick to whole foods, but I eat like crap, so we'll see. Tongue Tied

  • We are waiting til six months, but probably not past that. DD is SUPER interested in food, so I'd feel bad waiting much long than that. We'll probably start with oatmeal, then barley cereal, and not sure if we will bother with rice. Then we will pure our own veggies and fruits after that.

  • 6-7 months

Probably smooshed up/cut banana, avocados, steamed smooshed/cut carrots will be the first 3

We dont plan on pureeing anything, its too time consuming and messy (based on my experience with my first LO) lol More of a baby led weaning approach, like we did with baby #2 a few years ago

  • We will most likely try rice or oatmeal cereal right around 6 months. I was given the cereal at my baby shower, so that's really the only reason why I plan to use that first. I don't want it to go to waste.

Why would a CS matter? DD1 started at 5.5 months and did great, she was a CS baby

Something about not getting a certain stomach flora that babies get directly from the vagina in a vaginal birth. It may or may not affect their digestive system when it comes to introducing solids, but it's in my head that it might. lol

Weird. I had never heard of that before and I've had 2 c/s babies. Any links to share?

As for the question, we're still on the fence about whether to do BLW. We'll probably do a combination of purees and letting her play around with table food, so not really BLW.

When? Dunno. So far she can't sit unassisted and doesn't seem particularly interested in food. I'm in no hurry.

  • We started at 5 months.

Started with rice cereal, very thin at first and gradually getting thicker each day. This has been mostly to practice with the spoon and eating sitting up. We just follow her lead. Most days she will take several bites before getting fed up with it. At that point we are done and I nurse her or she gets a bottle. However, yesterday we started oatmeal and she loved it! She opened wide for the spoon, smacked her lips and ate almost all of it. Still nursed her afterward. Didn't seem to bother her at all, so we will stick with oatmeal for another week or 2, then maybe try barley. Then it's on to veggies!

  • 1. The later of 6 months or when she starts showing interest.. So far, she has no interest, but she's only 4 months.

    2. TBD, probably sweet potato or avacado

  • We will wait until 5.5 or 6 mo.  I waited 6 mo with DS1, but DS2 seems much more interested in our food and is much bigger.  I'm going to try to hold out though!  I haven't decided on BLW yet or not, it sounds easier; however, I get a little thrill out of making all the purees. :)  We'll probably do sweet potatoes first or the traditional rice cereal.  I'd skip the cereals, but DS1 was allergic and I need to know if DS2 is too.

  • Gave her rice cereal at 4 months. It was hit or miss and I didn't push it. A little after 5 months I introduced sweet potatoes and she likes them much better! We'll try avocado next. Probably tomorrow.

Also I made the sweet potatoes and some rice cereal. I didn't think it was time consuming at all and plan to do all of her food. It tastes so good that I've finished her sweet potatoes when she doesn't lol

  • J is over 5 months old so, at this point, we will start whenever he seems ready.

Not sure what food we will start with but most likely sweet potatoes. If he's at least 6 months old we will try BLW (unless I chicken out).

ETA: I was initially really obsessed with not doing any solids until 6 months but I'm more relaxed about it now. Whatever J wants or is ready for works for me.

Going to wait till 6 months or after. Pedi told us to stary with veggies because babies naturally like sweet things and if you start with fruit, they may refuse veggies. She suggested to start with yellow veggies then yellow fruits. I'm kicking myself for not asking what the significance of yellow is. But I guess we might start with squash. Also would love to do avocados and sweet potatoes as other first foods.
  • I just realized that I can't start solids yet --- DS doesn't have a high chair.

I just realized that I can't start solids yet --- DS doesn't have a high chair.

DS1 is still using ours!  I dread moving him to a real chair.  We used the bumbo the first few months with DS1 though for solids.

  • Dd usually uses a real chair but some nights she still isnt cooperative, so she still needs a high chair. I didn't think of using the bumbo. Maybe that will tide us over until she is done, thanks!
  • We started at 4 months with rice cereal and oatmeal. They love the oatmeal. We moved on to sweet potatoes and bananas and they love them both. Today we did avocados and that is their favorite so far.
  • I'll probably get flamed for this, but we started oatmeal in the third month.  We didn't do in consistently until four months, bu the got it at least three times a week.  Since then, I've kicked the oatmeal and we've done avocado, sweet potatoes and peas.  Next on the list is zucchini, squash, apples and bananas.  After zucchini and squash we're moving to two meals a day.  H loves to eat so there's no stopping!!
  • I've heard the same about veggies before fruits. Haven't heard about yellow before, though... I'll try to remember to ask at our 4 month appt tomorrow...

Our peas are growing well, so we may start with those...

  • 1) we seem to find so much conflicting info about when to start. Our Ped said it was just changed to 4 months, although I tend to use La Leche League's info.  She shows the "signs of readiness," so we gave it a shot at 5 months.  She spit everything out, so I don't think she's quite ready.  She enjoyed playing with it, so we'll try again in another week.

     2) we tried smashed up cooked sweet potato.

  • 1. I'm planning on starting after 6months, but I'll wait to see she is exhibiting the signs of readiness. She shows a few of them now, but the tongue thrust is I'm full effect. I'm so excited to start, but I'm fine waiting until she is more ready.

    2. I want to start with avocado or some other green pur?e.

    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers

  • 1) Definitely after 6 months, but when exactly is going to depend on him.

    2) Not sure. We are going to do BLW, so his first food will just be whatever he grabs for (and gets into his mouth, and actually swallows) first.

  • imagekelly321:

This is what I've been doing already!

    1. Around 7 months. My guys are preemies, so I want to wait until at least 6 months adjusted.

  • 1.  Probably right at 6 months.  I wouldn't mind waiting longer, but DD is SUPER interested in food right now.  I can't eat or drink while holding her anymore, because she's constantly reaching for it.  And if she sees you eating, she eyes you up and then gives you the stink eye for not sharing.

    2.  Going to start with oatmeal cereal, then barley, skipping the rice and moving on to a veggie.  Not sure which yet, but leaning toward either carrots or peas.  We plan to make our own baby food, preferably with produce from our local farmers market.  So excited!
