Diaper issues

My DD is 13 months old and we are STILL having diaper issues. We originally wanted to go as organic as possible so we started with Seventh Generation when she was born. We didn't like them much so we switched to Huggies Pure and Natural. We kept having troubles with blowouts so we switched to Pampers. Alas, we still had troubles with leaks and relented to having her wear the overnights all of the time which are big and bulky. I know it probably sounds ridiculous to have her in overnights all of the time, but we were so sick of her leaking through. Our latest troubles is that every time she rides in her car seat and poops, it leaks through and we have to tear her car seat apart and wash everything. We relented to putting pads underneath her, and it still leaks through.  Ugh, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • have you tried going up a size? what about using cloth diapers? is it blowouts and peeing through or just one?

  • We thought maybe it was a size issue as well so we went up a size about a month ago and still have the same troubles.  We have considered cloth, are they better for leaks?  It is rarely pee, just poop.

  • My question is same as pp...have you tried going up a size? My DD is breastfed so LOTS of blowouts in her first year, and when we experienced leaks, we knew it was time to go up a size. Have only used Pampers Swaddlers and now she's in Cruisers and have not had any issues.

The only other thing I can think of is that the diaper is on too tight (ie- might be right size, but might be "buckled" too tight)- any leaks we had were when either myself or DH latched the diaper too tight...the only way for the liquid/solid to go was up and out! LOL

  • If poop is the issue I would definitely suggest giving cloth a try. I have had some bad poop leaks in the last year and a half and they have been when she wasn't wearing cloth. The cloth seems to fit better and holds it in!

absolutely go to cloth! Used to have tons and tons of blowouts and had almost zero after switching to cloth around 3 months. Love cloth for that!

  • Fisher Price diapers on Amazon are wonderful for blowouts. The elastic band on the top rear really prevents blowouts. They also come in overnight...but you'd only need those if you have problems with super wet diapers.

  • We use Charlie Banana cloth diapers and do not have any of the blow out problems we did when DS was using disposable.

  • FWIW, I don't use cloth, but have many friends who do and have told me that they have issues with leaks overnight.

Are you using the Baby Dry or Extra Protection Pampers? We started DS with Swaddlers Sensitive and then switched to Baby Dry when he was a little older, and we really haven't had many issues. An occasional blowout or overnight leak, but for the most part, the Baby Dry have been great and they are not bulky at all.

Also, I've heard that Huggies are better for girls, so maybe try a different style of those?

  • No advice on the diapers but I was just wondering how you clean your carseat. They way you phased it, it makes me think you are taking everything apart including the straps. Straps are not supposed to be submerged in water and should only be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild baby soap. If you have submerged them or put them in the wash machine it would be best to look into ordering replacement straps from the company.

  • we use cloth diapers, a mix of G diapers, fuzibunz and alvababy throughout our DD 14 months of life, and we have only had like 2 poops go up the back, and almost out of the diaper, but not a true blow out. we are just having problems right now due to over night heavy wetting. and had to double up on the inserts, the inside is still extremely wet and heavy, but isn't leaking any more, so long as i change her ASAP after she wakes up.
